Toccoa is a beautiful city in Stephens County, Georgia, approximately 50 miles from Athens and approximately 90 miles northeast of Atlanta. The population was 9,323 at the 2000 census.

Toccoa, the county seat of Stephens County, was incorporated on February 26, 1875. Prior to English settlement, Cherokee Indians occupied the area of Toccoa. Legend says the Cherokee named the area "Toccoah" meaning "beautiful" in their language.

The City of Toccoa originated in 1873, and can be traced back to the development of a coaling station for the Atlanta to Charlotte Railroad after the Civil War.

Traveler's Rest State Historic Site, which is located in Toccoa is an 18th Century Stagecoach Inn Plantation constructed around the 1830s. This site was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Another favorite attraction in Toccoa is the Currahee Mountain, an outlying peak of the Blue Ridge chain that rises 1,874 feet above sea level.

Toccoa was home to Paul Anderson, the Guinness Book of World Records' "Strongest Man". Anderson was also the 1956 Olympic Gold Medalist in super heavy weight and weightlifting.

Toccoa is the home of Toccoa Falls College and The Currahee Golf Club.

Toccoa a good weekend getaway in N. Georgia

By JENNIFER BRETT Published on: 04/07/06 in the AJC

WHAT'S THERE

The high point of this North Georgia town is Toccoa Falls, located on the campus of Toccoa Falls College, a private Christian school. It's just north of downtown, on Toccoa Falls Road. Follow the signs to the falls. You'll park outside a visitors center, pay $1 and head out of the back of the center. A short walk takes you to the base of the falls, a spectacular sight.

HISTORY

The dam that holds back the lake above Toccoa Falls broke on Nov. 6, 1977, flooding the campus with more than 125 million gallons of water and killing 39 people. A list of the victims' names was erected on a marker at the base of the falls. Donations and volunteers from around the world helped the school repair and rebuild. The school's Web site includes a gallery of photos taken just after the flood: www.tfc.edu/adv/flood/page1.htm.

Between July 1942 and the end of World War II, 20,000 paratrooper recruits trained at Camp Toccoa. The grueling training included treks up and down Currahee Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest, elevation 1,000 feet. The camp is no longer there, but it was memorialized in the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers," based on Stephen Ambrose's book.

WHERE TO STAY

Toccoa is home to a magnificent bed and breakfast, the Simmons-Bond Inn. Built in 1903 by architect E. Levi Prater for lumber baron James B. Simmons, the home features heavy, oak pocket doors, a grand staircase illuminated by a 7-foot stained-glass window, and nine fireplaces. Legend holds that the storage space under the staircase was used to hide moonshine during Prohibition. Rates range from $59 to $109. 706-282-5183, 1-877-658-0746 (toll-free), www.simmons-bond.com

SHOPPING

Toccoa has some antiques stores worth perusing. The Whistle Stop is a sprawling emporium housed in a former department store at 202 N. Sage St. 706-282-1386. Buy the Tracks, at 841 W. Currahee St. on the way out of town, is much smaller but surprisingly good. The rustic pie safe selling for $410, the empire-style tiger oak sideboard for $600 and colored lithographs for $25 each all seem destined for dealers. 706-297-2063.

TRAIL RIDES

Get your motor running at the Locust Stake ATV area of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The tract offers 17 miles of trails open April 1 through Dec. 31 each year. The area is off Locust Stake Road, which is off Ga. 365 as you're heading toward town. A road sign points you in the right direction. www.fs.fed.us/conf/rec/orv_info.htm

LEARN MORE

The renovated train depot houses the city's welcome center, Chamber of Commerce, historical society and Currahee Military Museum. www.toccoagachamber.com, www.cityoftoccoa.com or www.toccoahistory.com.

HOW TO GET THERE

Take I-85 north to I-985 north. The road becomes U.S. 23 north. Turn right onto Ga. 115/Ga. 365/U.S. 123, then turn left to stay on U.S. 123, which goes right into downtown Toccoa.

New Year Brings Property Tax Deadlines for Toccoa

Atlanta Ga. - January 5, 2009: Georgia property owners who feel their property has decreased in value due to the slump in the housing market can file a property tax return (Form PT-50R) between January 1st and April 1st of each year.

This little known process allows property owners to declare what they feel is the true market value of their property and will activate the appeals process. The property tax returns then go through the same course an appeal would, getting reviewed by staff and eventually the county Board of Assessors.

According to James Bell, communications director for The Libertarian Party of Georgia (www.LPGeorgia.com), county property tax assessors are quick to target homes for reassessment that have sold for more than the assessed values but are slow to reassess properties that have fallen below assessed values.

"Filing a property tax return will force a review of your property and will trigger the appeals process which could lower your taxes", said Bell. "It is the responsibility of property owners to keep their neighborhood values in line with the market."

Bell said some neighborhoods hit by foreclosures have dropped in value by 10 to 50 percent, leaving many property owners paying more in taxes than they should.

April 1st is another important deadline to file for Homestead Exemptions. You must have owned the property on January 1st to qualify for these tax savings. These exemptions can save property owners hundreds of dollars each year.

TREE SEEDLINGS AVAILABLE TO GEORGIANS

The Georgia Forestry Commission is offering residents an inexpensive way to help the environment, reduce energy costs, beautify landscapes, and attract wildlife. Tree seedlings grown at the GFC Nursery provide these benefits and more. Several species of pine and hardwood are now available at low cost, can be ordered by phone, and delivered to the local county forestry unit for pick up by purchasers.

"This is the perfect time for planting trees," said Russ Pohl, Chief of Reforestation for the GFC. "Seedlings are dormant during the cold, wet months and are easily stored and shipped. Planting now gives the young trees plenty of time to reestablish root contact with the soil, and rainy weather reduces their need for additional water. All in all, this is the very best time for planting trees in Georgia."

Research shows trees improve air quality by sequestering carbon, the byproduct of burning fossil fuels, and by intercepting airborne particulates. One acre of trees produces enough oxygen for 18 people every day and provides valuable storm water runoff services. In addition, statistics show healthy trees can add up to 15 percent to residential property value. Strategically placed trees can reduce summer cooling costs by as much as 30 percent, while contributing to landscape aesthetics and the attraction of songbirds and other wildlife.

"It's easy to order GFC seedlings and we provide information and guidance on getting them planted on consumers' property," said Pohl. "We look forward to helping our customers learn more about this renewable Georgia resource."

To order GFC seedlings, call 1-800-GA-TREES, or download an order form at GaTrees.org.

Sen. Jim Butterworth Named a Next Generation Leader

ATLANTA - State Sen. Jim Butterworth (R-Cornelia) was recently selected as a "Next Generation Leader" by the Norton Native Intelligence Report.

Norton Native Intelligence is an annual presentation by The Norton Agency, north Georgia's largest, oldest and most successful real estate and insurance firm. For the last eight years, it has identified 10 individuals who have the potential to be current and future leaders. The honorees are considered and selected "because of the power of change they wield, as well as the impact they play on the changing landscape of North Georgia." Previous years' lists have included Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, Jimmy Talent, Philip Wilheit, Jim Walters and many others.

"This is a tremendous surprise and a great honor," Sen. Butterworth said. "I will do my best to live up to the expectations of the people of northeast Georgia and represent our district well in the state Senate."

According to the Norton Native Intelligence Report, "Butterworth is well prepared to serve his region with his experience as a pilot, former County Commissioner, volunteer and community supporter. Butterworth's rise to the State Senate was a slow, methodical step-by-step process built on wise decisions, good measure and visionary leadership. Bold and decisive, Butterworth is sure to be a strong representative and advocate for our economic vitality."

In the Senate, Butterworth serves as secretary of the Economic Development Committee and is a member of the Education & Youth, Veterans, Military & Homeland Security and Retirement Committees. He represents the 50th Senate District, which includes Towns, Rabun, Habersham, Stephens, Banks, Franklin and Hart counties along with a portion of White County. He can be reached by phone at 404.463.5257 or by email at Jim.Butterworth@senate.ga.gov.
