The World's Largest Tomato Fight
It Ain't Pretty
Photos From La Tomatina
The festivities are supposed to commence when the first person climbs to the top of the two story high, highly greased up wooden pole. However, since this usually takes a while, people just don't wait, and the tomato fight starts early.

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a brutal battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest. It is tradition for the women to wear all white and the men to wear no shirts. This festival started in a casual way in 1945, but wasn't officially recognized until 1952.
Approximately 20,000?50,000 tourists come to find out more about the tomato fight, multiply by several times Buñol's normal population of slightly over 9,000. There is limited accommodation for people who come to La Tomatina, and thus many participants stay in Valencia and travel by bus or train to Buñol, about 38 km outside the city. In preparation for the dirty mess that will ensue, shopkeepers use huge plastic covers on their storefronts in order to protect them. They also use about 150,000 tomatoes, just about 90,000 pounds.

- I went to La Tomatina both in 2007 & 2008. It was great a long time dream come true, as I always wanted to go to Spain and especially to La Tomatina. I was not disappointed, my experience even exceeded, as I found myself immersed in the shirt ripping and throwing of both the shirts & the tomatoes. I took many photos of the 2008 event and have posted them on Flickr. I found this site through my stats page on Flickr as the photos above are from and link to my Flickr page.

- Ya know, they tried to do a rendition of this on the Amazing Race when they went through Spain a couple of seasons ago. It was not a pretty sight. Much whining and yelling and frustration that just made for disgusting watching. The people on your page look like they're having way more fun than they were on TV.

Plan your trip
This year the festival will be held on August 25, 2010. Many stay in Valencia and commute to the event by bus, since there is limited housing available in Buñol.
