The World's Largest Tomato Fight

Each year in Bunol, Spain (in the Valencia region) the world's largest tomato fight commences. La Tomatina is the ultimate food fight. It is a festival for which people travel thousands of miles and all for the pleasure of pelting, and being pelted, by tomatoes. What a blast!

The festivities are supposed to commence when the first person climbs to the top of the two story high, highly greased up wooden pole. However, since this usually takes a while, people just don't wait, and the tomato fight starts early.

About La Tomatina

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a brutal battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest. It is tradition for the women to wear all white and the men to wear no shirts. This festival started in a casual way in 1945, but wasn't officially recognized until 1952.

Approximately 20,000?50,000 tourists come to the tomato fight, multiplying by several times Buñol's normal population of slightly over 9,000. There is limited accommodation for people who come to La Tomatina, and thus many participants stay in Valencia and travel by bus or train to Buñol, about 38 km outside the city. In preparation for the dirty mess that will ensue, shopkeepers use huge plastic covers on their storefronts in order to protect them.

I went to La Tomatina both in 2007 & 2008. It was great a long time dream come true, as I always wanted to go to Spain and especially to La Tomatina. I was not disappointed, my experience even exceeded, as I found myself immersed in the shirt ripping and throwing of both the shirts & the tomatoes. I took many photos of the 2008 event and have posted them on Flickr. I found this site through my stats page on Flickr as the photos above are from and link to my Flickr page.

I took Ian Usher to the Tomatina last year. Who is Ian Usher, well he sold his life on ebay and now he is doing 100 Goals in 100 Weeks, Google it to find out more. Our pictures can be found here http://valenciacomment.blogspot.com/2008/08/september-finally-arrives.html

I hate to admit it, but that looks like a lot of fun! Get rid of tons of frustration pitching tomatoes, huh? Great lens idea!

Ya know, they tried to do a rendition of this on the Amazing Race when they went through Spain a couple of seasons ago. It was not a pretty sight. Much whining and yelling and frustration that just made for disgusting watching. The people on your page look like they're having way more fun than they were on TV.

Plan your trip

This year the festival will be held on August 26, 2009. Many stay in Valencia and commute to the event by bus, since there is limited housing available in Buñol.

I like a bit of everything.  I'm a jack of all trades - ace of only ten or eleven.
