For Mysteries and Adventures with a Southwestern Viewpoint - Tony Hillerman
The Four Corners area (where Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico borders connect) forms the main setting for most of Tony Hillerman's novels. His stories show a deep understanding of Native American cultures--those of the Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, and Pueblo tribes--who live on the wide mostly-desert expanses of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.
Some of his novels have been made into movies--and some of those are available as DVDs.
Tony Hillerman recently passed away (October 26, 2008) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He had taught journalism at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque from 1966 through 1987.

Living on Guam is what now "defines" me. It was such a dramatic difference in my life and outlook on things that there's no way I'd be the same...
