This is a review of an extremely inexpensive cable tester from Amazon.com. Small, efficient, fits in a pants pocket, and tests CAT5 RJ45, RJ12 and RJ 11 cables and cable runs. Testing the cables through buildings can be a daunting. Unlike bringing an extra cable along for the printer that's acting erratic over the network, cables running for hundreds of feet in conduit can't easily be replaced. Testing their continuity is essential. If you make your own cables, this is also a great insurance policy in a box, costing less than $10 that proves you've done it right.

The Good
What's good about the Network Cable Tester NENGSHOU NS-468
Lightweight and sturdy, the NENGSHOU NS-468 consists of two parts plus a zippered carrying case, the Master cable tester, and the remote. The remote is ingeniously designed to clip directly to the right of the Master, and the remote has an RJ45 on one side, while the other side has an RJ11 jack. You're able to switch which side is up, or remove the remote and connect it elsewhere in the building and check the lights from there to see if you have continuity, crossed wires, etc.
Using an old battery, it performed well! Often times if the 9v battery is less than optimal, similar devices won't work at all.

The Bad
Things that need improvement
An auto-off would be good on any of these devices, where you could set the time limit from 20 minutes to one hour or constantly on. The manual is written in mandarin, Their website (http://www.nengshou.com is down, it's last update was 2005. That makes me think they haven't updated their printed material. Final marks are good for this device
It's built well, small, it does what it says it's supposed to do, and it's inexpensive enough that you can give one to all of your technicians and they'll be grateful to have a device they can use. An iPod would be nicer, but techies gotta get things done, and this helps them do the trick with little cash outlay.
Would like to see more of their product, especially their "NS-LTR Seeking for Audio Frequency" wand and tone generator. If the prices are similar to their Network Cable Tester, they'll have a winner.
If you're looking for an inexpensive network cable and toner (also known as "fox and hound"), so you can trace one connection from a wall to the specific cable in the network closet, we highly recomment the Trendnet Cable Tester AND probe (probe sold separately) For less than $100, it has some advantages over the Fluke Intellitone Pro 200.
