First Person Shooters Are Blasting Their Way To The Top!
There has been some amazing advancements within available games, as we will soon discuss below. So, get ready to be amazed - and then to rush out to the store or order a game from your favorite game website - so that you can get yourself caught up with the rest of us, and join in on the fun! FPS games are becoming more realistic, with multiple layers of graphic technologies to provide truer environmental depth realism, and better performing graphics as well. The single player story lines are better written in order to provide players a more interesting venue, and to keep you guessing from one chapter to the next. Finally, they are listening to the players in regards to game design! Beta testing is not just used for sales projections - they are actually asking the Beta testers what improvements that they would make and are addressing these in future releases. All in all, FPS game manufacturers are putting player desires and needs up front along with their bottom line. The result? Gamers are happy, and their sales are up!
Your Top 10 First Person Shooter Games
Now, I know a lot of you are loyal to your particular games, and may not agree with where they stand in this list, if they stand in it at all. However, I can assure you that each of these games were carefully played, reviewed, re-played, and re-reviewed to earn their place on this list. Placement is based upon several key factors: 1) Game Mechanics, 2) Game Flow, 3) Multi-Player Action vs. Single Player Action, 4) Realism, and 5) Graphical Performance.
I can assure you, no matter where your favorite game places on this list, you will find a great amount of enjoyment if you get yourself involved with playing any of these games, and will also most likely agree with their listed order if you manage to buy or play them all. My advice is that you start at the top, and then work your way down... It helps you to see differences and flaws in the lower ranked games that you didn't find in the top listed game or games. Enjoy this list, and have fun!
1) Call of Duty: Black Ops
Black Ops takes place during the era of the Cold War, so a lot of the weapons and technology is of the times. However, you are looking at the BEST technologies and weapons of the time. It gives you a look into how special operations warfare was conducted during the time, and how arduous it was for our soldiers to endure. The game play is fast paced, but realistic in the fact that if your guy is hauling around an M60 machine gun, he won't run as fast as if he was carrying an Uzi. There are some exceptional online information resources that will education you how to be extremely competitive with online game-play, not to mention how to get past the campaign levels which seem almost impossible to beat, so use them wisely. Customizable logos, face-paint, and camouflage also makes is possible to design your soldier to be a truly unique representation of your online self. All in all, a well rounded first person shooter game, both in its realism and accuracy for the time in which the game takes place. Now, if Treyarch can just get rid of all of the bugs and technical issues, we'll have a long-standing champion!
2) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Modern Warfare 2 is a top contender fo all other FPS games are compared to. The game has amazing graphics (both in single player and multi-player modes), with realistic character interaction with their environment. Gunfire and explosions not only impact players realistically, but also create temporary visibility issues from the smoke and/or flames which are produced. Gunfire affects your ability to see and aim at your target realistically as well. Weapon accuracy is also EXTREMELY realistic. Game play has plenty of options when it comes to the type of character you want to play, allowing you to choose the skills for you character which are best suited for the particular game you are playing, and as you prestige within the game (ten prestige levels in all) you unlock more customizable characters. All in all, you will be able to have 10 customized classes, with their own weapon, equipment, and skills (or perks), so that you will be ready for any online gaming scenario.
3) Medal of Honor
The newest edition to our list, and immediately snagging the #2 position is Medal of Honor! (PC, XBox360, PS3) This high intensity, and scalable game, shows its muster by taking a lot of gamers away from their other FPS games - some of them to stay. It has good graphics, excellent combat realism, and even allows you to drive a few choice vehicles in the game. There are many game types, and several in game classes to choose from. Of course, the more time that you spend on a class, the better it gets. While the grenade throws in the game seem a little short, the rest of the game play is pretty amazing. Bullets penetration is extremely realistic, so hiding behind a box or a pallet will not save you - especially from APC exploding rounds! You can climb on top of some structures, so play around with the maps to find your favorite sniper spots. Also, the use of C4 or an IED is available in game, so practice switching to them placing and triggering them to ensure that you maximize your capabilities. Your ammo will run out, but picking up the guns of fallen enemies always helps! I still think that in game graphics are still better for MW2, however, with the size and speed of the Medal of Honor gaming experience, I definitely think that Medal of Honor has come the closest to taking the crown!
4) MAG
MAG, or "Massive Action Game", (PS3) is definitely #2 on our list. Now, when I first saw the graphics of MAG (I purchased the game as soon as it came out) I will say that I was somewhat disappointed. It wasn't as clean and as realistic as MW2. There are other short-comings as well. There is no single player story mode to the game. This game is solely for online game play. However, the word "Massive" is exactly descriptive of the game. In the largest game play mode available in the game, there are 256 players in a single room! That's right, there are 128 players on your team, and there are 128 players on the opposing team. Plus, game play is the fastest that I've seen for FPS games so far. The combat action is so fast and so intense that you must always use surrounding cover when you try to move around the map. A split second in the open can mean your being taken out and having to re-spawn back at your spawn point. There are some other cool features as well. With so many players, the maps are extremely large. Since spawning all the way at the beginning is ridiculous, the game will allow you to spawn at other spawn locations that your team was able to capture within the map. Combined with the occasional para-trooping drop offs, you will have plenty of options available to you. There are some vehicles that you can drive within the game, usually APC and light armored carriers such as Hum Vee's, but I would have liked to see more.
So, while you are limited to online game play, and the graphics aren't as good as our #1 spot holder MW2, the scale and combat action ferocity alone won this game its #2 spot in our list. It is definitely a welcome game to play when you get burned out on MW2, and it will speed up your reflexes while you are away!
5) Battlefield Bad Company 2
However, the graphics are still a little less than desired. There is a lack of depth in the game graphics, and we would like to see more of the realism of smoke, blowing debris, dirt or sand blowing in the wind, that we see in MW2. Still, all in all BBC2 is definitely a fun and welcome FPS that allows for a lot of fun with blowing up the enemy when they hide within buildings... Sorry snipers, you are no longer safe within, behind, or on top of buildings using your claymores as a deterrent. You will definitely need to spend some time working on your driving/flying skills as having no-one on your team that knows how to use them pretty much leads to a loss of the game. Plus, while cover is necessary in the game, EVERYTHING can be destroyed. So, enough firepower can reach you no matter what you're hiding behind!
6) Crysis
Crysis (PC, XBox360, PS3) is definitely a game that has to be included in the top 10 FPS games. The question that we want to know is, and you may share this question as well, why isn't it #1? The answer that was mulling around was that the game was too advanced for our hardware - that you would have to spend around $3k - $5k on a computer to get the graphics and game to run at maximum capability. For me, that wasn't a good enough answer, because they didn't offer up public proof. However, let's talk about its good points.Crysis is definitely an amazing FPS game. The graphics are incredible and, now that they've made the Crysis 2 game (available Holiday 2010) for gaming consoles, finally accessible. People were able to play the first Crysis game to completion, although I didn't know anyone who was able to put game graphics to 100% in the original game. However, the game graphics and dynamics (it was the first game to successfully introduce a destructive environment) are still one of the best around. There wasn't a multi-player feature, but the single player story and game play was phenomenal all on its own. If you have the latest and greatest PC and graphics card out there, then definitely buy this for your PC and play it before Crysis 2 comes out. You won't regret it.
7) Call of Duty: World at War
The game is historically accurate with the environment, as well as with the dress of soldiers in the game and weapons that they are using. They improved upon the graphics, and made combat more realistic. With the introduction of the flame-thrower as a usable weapon in game, and making snipers harder to see and more deadly as well, the game definitely was a welcome distraction to modern warfare. Plus, you didn't have all of the military history buffs screaming in the rooms about how inaccurate the game was... Thank goodness!
8) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
With COD4, it was also one of the first games where single-player game action was just as good as online game action. While the online game play map access may have been engineered slightly different from when you played them during the single player story game play, they were exactly similar. There was no disappointment when you switched from single-player to online game play, and back again. Therefore, you had more players who wanted to do both, and even re-do the single player story later on after they've beaten it once or twice. This tells us that the game itself was designed extremely well, and had the player in mind and not just the bottom line for Activision. That, combined with a single-player story which was amazing to experience AND to play through, made COD4 a top-contender.
9) Gears of War 2
Gears of War 2 (XBox360) definitely took us by surprise. With the cartoon like graphics, similar to War Hammer figurines, there wasn't much expectation out of us hard-core realistic warfare gamers. However, I was recruited into the game by my brother-in-law who lives out of country, and wanted something that I could play with him and possibly have my wife play with him occasionally. The story and game itself was truly amazing, and had some bad guys that you just didn't want to have to meet in a dark alley... but you would. So, it came down to wither you would either lay there and die, or find a way to blast your way out. While you can see some parallels with Crysis or Halo games with the alien invasion story line, there were some pretty impressive creatures and events which happened in the single player story which made me like the Gears of War game series - I even went back and purchased the first Gears of War just so that I could get the whole experience!Online game play took some adaptation, but had some fun surprises as well. I mean, how many games can you saw your opponent in half with a rifle-mounted chain saw? Plus, while Halo introduced the plasma sticky grenades, there was something a little more real and hard-core with sticking your enemy with a magnetic grenade, or using them as proximity mines by using their blades to attach them to a wall. All in all, it is a slower paced game. However, there is a huge following in the U.S. and abroad, and there is definitely some fun in playing people in other countries. It made the top ten list, and I can definitely guarantee that you'll have some fun with it.
10) Halo Reach
Halo Reach (XBox360) is the latest release in the Halo game series. Halo Reach has some amazing new technologies for the Halo and alien fighters, allowing it to completely grab a unique niche in the FPS market. We were much more impressed with Reach than we were with ODST, so it is definitely worth your time to check out. If you're a Halo fan, you will finally have an improvement available for you to buy.Be sure to practice your grenade throwing - this is true in any first person shooter game actually - as it can lead to some pretty resourceful and creative kills or multi-kills. I'm personally fond of hitting someone with a sticky grenade, or if being chased to place a sticky grenade on a wall or the floor before rounding a corner. Needle guns are more deadly in the game, as are shotguns, so use them often. However, a good sniper on your team is the deadliest asset that you can have. Since vehicles are a major part of the game, practice driving each map as often as you can... you'll learn specific routes that you can take at high speeds so that someone can shoot from the mounted weapon on your vehicle for massive amounts of kills before someone finally blows up your vehicle or kills your gunner. Vehicle kills are also fun, so don't just rely on the shooter! Having a "jumper" or two also helps (the new rocket boosters that allow your soldier to fly vertically for a short period of time), but it takes some time to master their use as they only last for a few seconds at a time. Also, well timed force-field bubbles can mean the difference between a win and a loss.

- If you want to play a unique action shooter game, you'd better get your own copy of the "Syndicate" game, which will be released on February next year. The game is set in 2069 where business is war.

- Whats up with Gears of War 2 and Halo Reach being at the bottom of the list? IMO they should be second and third respectively. And whats up with FOUR COD games?! I wonder how it would turn out if all the games were, BlackOps, Halo CE, Halo2, Halo3, HaloODST, HaloWars, and HaloReach. This guy is either a CODfanboy or just stupid.

- What kind of a review is this? This isn't fair because most of the games are from different timelines. I could put the worst Halo game (Halo Wars) together with Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog and a bunch of other 1990's games and HaloWars would obviously win.

- Actually, if you were being fair, Halo Wars would lose to Super Mario and the others. That's because those 1990 games recieved a FAR bigger response than Halo Wars. Now, if I remember correctly, the first Halo was a gaming phenomenon. It set the benchmark for other games like COD. Sure, it's got terrible graphics compared to BlackOps, campaign is repetitive and overall boring, but lets face it guys, it was made in 2001. You simply can't compare an ancient game with a modern one like the way this guy did.

- I don't get this. Were all these games released on the same year? If they were, this review would be a tad one sided, but still ok. Now, the fact that they were from different timelines means this review IS COMPLETELY BIASED. Its only COD COD COD and COD.
