Field Team's "One Fishing Fly Challenge"

Informal "Just for Fun" Fishing Contest

One Fishing Fly Challenge

The Field Team decided to begin documenting its informal flyfishing contest - the "One Fishing Fly Challenge", where the Team selects a fishing fly to see who catches the biggest fish.

Time periods for the Challenge have varied from one day to one month in the past. For ease of tracking, the Team decided on one month challenges.

Feel free to checkout the results and/or join in on the challenge.  The rules are simple, and everyone is a winner - no prizes just fun!

Olive Wooly Bugger

(aka Olive Wooley Bugger, Olive Woolly Bugger)

A favorite of our Field Team is the Olive Wooly Bugger. This fishing fly that has landed many Bass and Trout!

In smaller sizes, it works well on Panfish and, at the right time of the year, will catch crappie when fished slowly under a strike indicator.

Variants include Weighted, Bead Head, and Flashabou! Matching size to the forage on-hand and combined with its olive color, this fishing fly has been a consistent producer each season!

Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph

Another favorite of the Field Team is the Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. A "buggy" looking pattern that works well on Trout.

It looks enticing to Trout and Bluegill/Sunfish, does a great job simulating emergers, and imitates "Trout Chow" used by hatcheries to feed their Stocker Trout!
Loading

Prince Nymph

Another great fishing fly that works on Panfish and Trout. A blast to use on Panfish in the Spring and Summer; the "go to" fishing fly when Trout are feeding on nymphs but keep ignoring other offerings.

Especially like the high-visibility of the white Biots used for the wing! Makes for ease of locating the fishing fly underwater as the fish strikes.

Black Ant/Gnat

(Includes the Griffith's Gnat)

One pattern we are sure to keep in our Fly Box is the Black Ant or Black Gnat. Pattern can be tied in a variety of ways using different material and techniques.

Works on Trout when they are feeding on "mosquitoes" on the surface or just below the surface. May require a "little" work to determine the right size to use for a given situation but once found, it can make the difference between a "so, so" day and a great day!

When Summer arrives, pattern can be readily used on Bluegill!

Foam Spider

When Summer arrives and days get longer, we tend to Foam Spiders to enjoy some great topwater action for Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass!

One variant that our team uses is the "Foam Rubber Spinder Variant" using the Foam Spider Tying Method (see section below).

Do keep this fishing fly handy in Green, White, and Yellow colors. For Chennille, we recommed Pearl; seems to be the most consistent producer!

Tying the Foam Spider

Favorite Method

This is the method that we use when tying "Foam Spiders". It also the same method that we use when tying the "Foam Rubber Spider Variant" mentioned in the opening paragraph of this Lens! Especially like the way the legs are tied on, makes for easier setting of the rubber legs.

Foam Spider Variant - Grasshopper

Variation of the Foam Spider

A variation of the Foam Spider is the Grasshopper. Tied in a similar manner as the Foam Spider, main difference is the foam body is shaped to mimic a grasshopper instead of a spider.

Clouser Minnow

One pattern we really favor when fishing for Striped Bass, White Bass, and Hybrids. Also, a producer of Largemouth Bass and Crappie (for Crappie, we use a variant that is tied onto a Crappie Jog Hook).

Have used this fishing fly using flyfishing gear, on cork and jig rig using surfcasting gear, and when trolling a flatline along points for White Bass on the local lake!
