My 10 Best Hard Rock Guitars Under $1000

Hard Rock guitar doesn't require the meticulous precision that heavy metal demands, that's not to say virtuosity is not abundant in Hard Rock, but super thin necks, active pickups and weird body shapes are not main necessities.

Attitude, mojo and a good distorted sound, those are the main attributes I look for in an electric guitar for hard rock.

I've been very lucky to work and play with hundreds of electric guitars in the last decade, and here are my top 10 electric guitars for hard rock under $1000.00

#1 - Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded

Ever since I saw the video of Alice in Chains 'Would' owning an all mahogany Les Paul has been imprinted in my mind. And it wasn't until 2005 that I was able to make that wish a reality.

It's the only 'impulse buy' I've done till this day. I had owned a regular Studio before, but to me the pickups on the Studio Faded combined with its raw finish was the deciding factor.

A Les Paul among other things is heavy, expensive and the pickups might not work for all styles of music. The fact that this one doesn't have a maple top nor paint makes it cheaper, lighter and gives it a very unique hard rock sound.

#2 - ESP LTD EC-1000

The Les Paul guitar is among the most imitated, almost all electric guitar companies feature a variation of this shape. Among the many that I have tried my favorite are the ones by ESP.

The LTD EC it's a more comfortable guitar to play ergonomically speaking, the body and neck are thinner, and features jumbo frets.

If you're into heavy metal this guitar with EMG pickups is a good option, but for hard rock I prefer the one with Seymour Duncan humbuckers.

#3 - Epiphone Tribute Les Paul Standard

Since 2003, when Gibson set up a private factory in China to build their Epiphone Les Paul guitars, their quality has improved substantially. Their Les Paul Standard is already among the best guitars in its price, and the Tribute is no different.

It has real American Gibson pickups with series/parallel switching. It comes in 2 types of necks, the famous 60's slim tapered and a very comfortable asymmetrical shape. And it includes a hardshell case.

#4 - Fender American Special Stratocaster

Many of my favorite players are known for playing Stratocasters, like Ritchie Blackmore, Jimi Hendrix, Yngwie Malmsteen and Eric Clapton.

The American Special is in the middle of the Hwy 1 and the American Standard. The finish is thicker than the almost non existent of the Hwy 1, but not as nice as the American. The pickups are fairly hot, the bridge humbucker has a lot of power.

#5 - Ibanez RG 2550

When I bought my first Gibson Les Paul Studio I felt like a million bucks, but after a while I found it limiting. The first time I tried an RG I was shocked at how efficient the guitar felt. The neck was the thinnest I had ever played, and it was the first time I had 2 humbuckers and a single coil.

There are many RG guitars to choose from, but the Japanese Prestige series are above the rest. The RG2550 while barely scraping the $1000 mark has Dimarzio pickups and one of the best tremolo systems ever.
