Welcome To The Top 50 Rock Vocalists Of All Time!
So a little catch-up for those of you that are new to this. I'm going to choose 50 vocalists that have dominated their respective eras in rock music. You can vote the ones you like to the top and add your own submissions if you really want to.
As always a list like this is personal opinion and whilst you may agree with some of these, it is highly likely that there are some you won't! Unlike the Top 100 Guitarists Of All Time lens, I will be choosing all of the people in the original list and won't be enlisting the help of anyone else.
This lens will include singers from sub-genres of rock music so don't flame me for putting punk singers and the like. (Another example being Kurt Cobain - alternative rock/grunge)
I hope I do this justice!

The Freddie Mercury Duel!
Was Freddie Mercury over-rated?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes
mjevic says:
Only slightly though. He has a voice that i could listen to constantly and was part of one of the best rock bands of all time. Essentially every song i heard with him in it i enjoyed so he is one of the best but i cant say he is the best.

Retrosurrection says:
He is horribly overrated, as a vocalist he is, I say overrated because people simply flat out lie about his vocal background. He was NEVER trained in opera, for that matter he was never trained in vocals PERIOD hence why he blew his voice out and developed vocal nodules. I love Queen's music, it's one of my foundations for my taste in music but fans need to draw the line between favoritism and actual talent. Freddie had a beautiful natural tone but no real vocal technique to speak of, he was in choir when he was younger THAT WAS IT, even his doctor stated "never had a vocal lesson in his life, he had more vocal nodules this side of Stevie Nicks". Watch live in Wembly and you'll see what I mean, he simply has no range live, he damaged his voice due to improper singing. Or check out the Barcelona performance, oh wait that was lip synced. Praise the music of Queen, praise what Freddie wrote, he was a good singer for what he was worth and he had a tone unlike no other, that coupled with his different(nice word for improper) approach to high notes made him hard to forget, but he NEVER EVER could be considered one of the technical best in rock music. I'm not dissing Queen, I own their discography, so I probably own more and know more than many of you, but I'm saying that I'm tired of seeing this guy blown out of proportion.

I'd have to say he is, simply because I'm not a big fan of his. David Bowie on the other hand...

poddys says:
He had a good voice, and had lots of stage presence, but I don't think he was the greatest. Often the singer makes the song and the song makes the singer. I think Queen provided the perfect material to make Freddie Mercury a star.

Hard to overrate the key voice of Bohemian Rhapsody and other great rock anthems against any of the contenders!

You can't over-rate such a top-notch singer!

Heather426 says:
NO, he was great, but Elvis had a better voice quality in my opinion, and was the best sounding singer ever

He was one of the greatest vocalists of all time. That operatic range Beempa mentioned was amazing! We'll always love you, Freddie.

Considering the fact Freddie was a vocally trained OPERA SINGER who turned to rock-n-roll, I'd say he was rather "under-rated" for his vocal abilities. :)

beeobrien says:
Absolutely not! Freddie was a master showman and extraordinary talent.

- What about Sully Erna (Godsmack) and Layne Staley (Alice in Chains)? They are not my favourite but their voices are also amazing :) For me the best vocalist is of course Freddie Mercury. I also admire James Maynard Keenan as Tool's my favourite band :)
Anyway, great ranking!!

- Only thing that bothered me with the list is that my favorite vocalist, Serj Tankian is not even on there :/. He has incredible vocal range it is mind-blowing and his diversity in music is also pretty awesome.

- Really excellent list, probably the best I've seen of rock vocalists. You missed Don Dokken, he's quite talented as well. Did I see Dio or not?. However, I wouldn't put Bon Jovi before Freddie Mercury or Elvis. I'd probably put Elvis as #1. But you hit almost every great singer I love. Nice job! Congratulations for your excellent taste.

- I boosted my faves, of course. Thanks so much for including Janis Joplin. She really opened the door for the lady rockers who followed her. Plus she was amazing, IMHO.

- I saw the title of this lens and knew it had to be one of yours!
My answers:
David Bowie
Alice Cooper
Bret Micheals
Jon Bon Jovi
uhm... one of mine wasn't on the list, but I voted for the other 3, and hey, Bowie was there, so I'm happy! *rushes off to pull out my collection of Bowie records/tapes/CDs/books/etc* Love Bowie!
