Torchwood TV Season Episode Review

Torchwood

Torchwood is a great show and reminds of a british version of the X - Files. Capt. jack Harkness and his team investigating all sorts of alien and paranormal events. its a great spinoff from Doctor Who. season one was great i love the show.

Being glued to my seat for the final episodes of Torchwood, I thought the series was FANTASTIC!!!!! Being a long follower of Dr Who, was wondering how well a spin off would go down. Well BBC you've got it right for a change. During the new series of Dr Who, we were introduced to "Torchwood", but who would realise, that an anagram of "Doctor Who" would be such an impact on another series. I realise for any younger viewers who were looking forward to watching Torchwood were told it was more for an adult audience, and were probably disappointed in not being allowed to watch it. Hunky John Barrowman made each episode worth watching. I wonder how many people in the final episode were in tears thinking that he was killed off, until the final minutes when he suddenly came back from the dead!! To the producers and actors of the series, a big hearty WELL DONE, and hurry up with the next series as my evenings in front of the television will be rather dull and boring till then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a wonderful character development episode for Ianto, and a very interesting way to tie in Torchwood with Doctor Who.

Although I adored this episode for its development of Ianto, its treatment of Jack and Ianto's relationship, and its development of Gwen and Owen's fling, there were somethings that were fairly annoying. For one thing, the pterodactyl attack was just silly, and for another, the whole "run away and open this really heavy door" thing was quite implausible.

Another thing -- how on earth did Ianto manage to smuggle the conversion unit in? That's both intriguing and frustrating.

BEWARE! HERE THERE BE SPOILERS!
At this point of the review, I'm going to take a look at the series episode by episode. While I am going to try and remain spoiler free the best I can, if you don't want to know, avert your eyes!

Episode 01 - Rose
Where in the Doctor and Rose meet for the first time, and we encounter an enemy of old. . . .
Compared to the classic series and what we we're used to, this episode flew by at a breakneck speed. Rose was filled with such energy and life compared to the slow-moving 4 part episodes of old. It's a simplistic pilot, but a wonderful introduction to characters and the universe.

Episode 02 - The End of the World
Where in the Doctor and Rose travel to the year 5 million to witness the destruction of the earth, and encounter a sinister plot. . . .
Finally - Doctor Who with a budget! The visuals are superb, the style and the design is stunning. The parade of colorful aliens, something that the old show must have longed for many a time, is realistic, and the wonderful moment with the Doctor and Rose at the end - great stuff.

Episode 03 - The Unquiet Dead
Where in the Doctor and Rose meet Mr Charles Dickens in 18th century Wales amid strange poltergeist activity. . . .
Of all the new episodes, this psudo-historical story is closest in flavor and tone to the classic series. The episode features some wonderful moments, and a fine delivery from Simon Callow as Charles Dickens.

Episode 04 & 5 - The Aliens of London & World War III
Where in the Doctor and Rose return to modern day London just in time for mankind's first contact with life from beyond the stars. . . .
While a rather average two part episode, we begin to see the main theme of the season develop - actions and consequences. While the invasion plot is really nothing more than what we've seen before, we finally get to see what happens to the ones left behind when one of us "stupid apes" runs off into time and space with this mysterious man called the Doctor. It's a fascinating angle and I'm surprised that took us 40 years to see it.

Also the spaceship crash into Big Ben is a scene that will go down as an iconic moment in the shows history. A great money shot.

Episode 06 - Dalek
Where in the Doctor and Rose meet the last survivor of the time war. . . .
Where the Doctor goes, the Daleks cannot be far behind. What can I say about this episode - stunning, brilliant, rich with characterization and dialogue, and a Dalek that is truly effective and terrifying. And never in my long history as a Doctor Who fan, would I ever have dreamed that I would care about a Dalek. Full marks to Rob Shearman for a top shelf story.

Episode 07 - The Long Game
Where in the Doctor and Rose (and Adam) travel to Satellite Five and uncover a sinister plot by the Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe - but who is REALLY behind the scenes?
Well, it had to happen sometime. The Long Game is the weakest of the new series by a pretty wide margin. While some of the bits were really well done (a companion who doesn't take to the Doctor's lifestyle instantly), the story wasn't all that good. Seen in the context of the whole series (especially the last two episodes), it's a little bit better, and does have some promising seeds for the future of the show - but overall it's a very run of the mill episode.

Episode 08 - Father's Day
Where in the Doctor and Rose travel to 1987 to see Rose's father before he dies - but be careful what you wish for. . . .
Paul Cornell was always very adapt at the art of exploring the inner workings of his characters in the Doctor Who novels he wrote - so I was eager to see if his skills would translate well in script form. The end result, while at times heavy handed, delivered a solid emotional impact.

Episode 09 & 10 - The Empty Child & The Doctor Dances
Where in the Doctor and Rose encounter the dashing scoundrel Captain Jack Harkness in the middle of war torn London. . . .
Where Dalek delivers a solid character driven piece, and Bad Wolf/The Parting of Ways is a excellent capper to the series, my favorite episodes of the series has to be this two parter. The horror is etched into every frame of film - the creepiest show I've seen in a long, long time. The humor is solid, the characters well written and the ending - the sheer joy that the Doctor displays that everybody lives - never fails to move me. It's the turning point in his characterization, and one of the best moments of the series old or new. Instant classic.

Episode 11 - Boomtown
Where in the Doctor and Rose encounter an old enemy thought long dead. . . .
This is the episode that either fans love or hate. It's a quiet, character driven piece mostly, a rest to see how far along the Doctor and Rose (and Mickey) have come before launching them headlong into the final chapter. Again, the consequences of the Doctor's lifestyle and meddling are explored here, in a way we haven't seen before: "I've see you fight your enemies, Doctor. Now dine with them." A perfect breather before the final act.

Its interesting to note how far Mickey has come. When we were first introduced to his character way back in Rose, he was a boob, a liability - a selfish, shallow character. Since then, I've grown more sympathetic to him, while growing concerned at Rose and her increasing detachment to her friends and family. By the end of the series, I was totally on Mickey's side, while seeing Rose as a spoiled brat. Hopefully we'll see some resolution to this in series two.

Episode 12 & 13 - Bad Wolf & The Parting of Ways
Where in the Doctor and Rose fight the last battle of the time war. . ..
Stunning.
Brilliant.
Wow.
Everything I've ever wanted to see on screen in Doctor Who and more. A perfect end to the series, and frankly the only way that it could have ended. To say more would veer into the spoiler territory that I've been trying so hard to avoid - but the more I think of the redemption of the Doctor sacrificing himself for Rose, the regeneration only makes sense. There's nowhere left to go with the character, and anything after that point would be anticlimactic. Thus a clean slate is needed - the Doctor takes his medicine and becomes, quite literarily, a new man. And from the 15 seconds of screen time, David Tennant wins me over.

In short - fantastic.

Overall -
With the exception of The Long Game, I thought all of the episodes were very strong and well written - and frankly even The Long Game wasn't all that bad. It's funny to look back 13 weeks later at how amazed I was at the energy and style of Rose - and to think that Rose would be one of the weaker entries of the series. Russell T Davies and the rest of the production staff should be commended for pulling off the most difficult feat of breaking new ground and updating the show for a modern audience while remaining true to the core of what made the show so great in the first place.

Here's to the next 40 years. The Doctor is dead, long live the Doctor!

So watch this gripping drama and decide for your self
