Popular Tourist Attractions in Moscow, Russia
- Red Square (Krasnaya ploshchad), Moscow, Central Russia
Red Square, situated between the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, Saint Basil's Cathedral, and the GUM department store, is not only an area surrounded by history but a historical landmark itself. Red Square, surprisingly, does not get its name from the link between Russia and communism, or from the red bricks surrounding the square, but rather gets its name from the Russian word krasnaya which can mean either "red" or "beautiful." This name was originally applied to St Basil's Cathedral, but moved towards the square in the 15th century, when the square was created (replacing old wooden houses that were in the area.)
Since its creation, it has been a central landmark in Russian history. Red Square started as Moscow's primary marketplace, but its purpose has also been for public ceremonies - the coronation of Russia's Tsars, the Soviet address point, the Soviet Military Parades (notably, Victory Parade in 1945 when the Nazi's were defeated,) concerts for groups such as Pink Floyd or Paul McCartney, and many other substantial events. - Moscow Kremlin (Moskovsky Kreml), Moscow, Central Russia
The Moscow Kremlin is what most people think of when they think of Russia. The Kremlin is actually a series of citadels, four cathedrals, four palaces and the Kremlin towers with the Kremlin walls. It's buildings are unmatched in beauty and originality.
It's history can be traced back to BC days, originating from a fortified structure on Borovitsky Hill. When the area began to be built up in the 1300's, it was used as the seat for the Grand Dukes and Princes. It then became the residence of the Tsars, until Tsar Peter who made his residence in St. Petersburg.
The Kremlin has survived sieges and reconstruction throughout all these generations, and when Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812 he tried to destroy the Kremlin. Due to heavy rains, this was not fully accomplished, and the Kremlin was restored. Many of the ancient buildings and churches, however, were destroyed.
The Kremlin then continued to be the residence for the Tsars, until the Russian Revolution when the Soviet's took over the country. Lenin then selected the Kremlin for his residence, and it has been used ever since for governmental affairs.
The buildings of the Kremlin are elaborate, beautiful, and incredibly unique. The rich history that each building represents cannot be understated, and the designs of the buildings themselves are simply magnificent. - St. Basil's Cathedral (Pokrovsky Sobor), Moscow, Central Russia
St Basil's Cathedral is beautiful, elegant, colorful and unique. There is no other place, or cathedral, that looks like it in the world. It is located on the South East of Red Square, and was built between 1555 and 1561. The Cathedral is often confused for the Moscow Kremlin, but it is not part of the Kremlin. - Moscow Metro, Moscow, Central Russia
The Metro is more than just an extensive transport system that is spread out across the capital. Each station is uniquely and beautifully designed, containing art and antiquity. Outside most of the stations are also markets and shops, adding to the experience. The Metro adds to the beauty of the city significantly. - Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow
The Bolshoi theater, built in 1824 in Theatre Square, is an elegant theatre for ballet and Opera. This is where Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake premiered, and where both Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker were originally performed to absolute perfection, even to this day. The stunning beauty of the theatre and the productions there are certainly not to be missed.

What a well researched site! Good job. I have a friend who is a Russian X-patriot and is now working for Delta Airlines. Isn't it interesting that when we were kids we had bomb shelters to protect us from the Russians? Now they are our friends. Too bad we can't remember that in all world conflicts! Peace, Peace, Peace!
