Creative Tools as Toys

Tools as Toys

When my girls were young, I use to ask a lot of questions and listen to others. One piece of advise that I came across was give gifts of tools rather than toys. I hid this advice away, and while I did get them some toys, I also gave them age appropriate tools and toys that encouraged creativity. Today many people say my daughters are creative and enjoy the fruit of their hands.

Paper Toys

Great for travel or home.

Some of the first tools were paper and crayons. I still remember teaching them not to eat the crayons. This was in a controlled and supervised area to prevent coloring in unacceptable places such as walls, books, etc. As they got older they graduated first to colored pencils, then to markers. To this day both still enjoy drawing in their 20's.

Paper Toys For Older Kids and Up

As they grew older and could be trusted with the care and handling of better supplies, we started getting quality papers, like art drawing pads and tracing paper. We also got better pencils and markers.

Books on Drawing and Paper Crafts

We visited the library regularly and found books very useful in sparking creativity. Give your children resources, supplies and time and space to create and you will be blessed.

Today's Crayola

As a child I obsessed over trying to keep the crayons in their box and in order. My children did not have the same obsession, and we had a tin filled with crayon pieces, eventually they'd get to small to use.

Kits and Hobbies

As children get into upper elementary and middle school kits are a great way to try out new skills. Kits are great because they provide instructions for the beginner. If you are fearful of these things, I'd encourage you not to pass that fear on to your children. Chances are you know someone who could help them if the need it, and there's always the internet. If the child likes the kit you can buy another or get more supplies and books so they can develop their new skill.

We have found that tools actually provide not only more educational value for our children but also longer term play value. Toys often have only one purpose and children soon loose interest. Tools are endlessly creative and are used for years by children with their increasing talents and abilities.

    Wonderful lens!

I had 'creative kids', so creative tools were a necessary part of playtime supplies. My daughter began drawing before she was 5 and went from crayons and scrap paper to artist sketch pads and special art pencils and acrylics. Today she is an artist, having graduated college with a degree in Fine Art. I'm proud of my talented artistic girl and happy we were able to give her the 'tools' to encourage her natural talent.
