What is Trading Up for Charity?

It started as a challenge - and now I'm passing on the challenge to everyone reading this lens!

Just for fun, I accepted the challenge of taking a paperclip and trading it for an item of greater value - and then trade that item for an item of greater value - and again - and so on.

There's a time limit - one month. Starting on June 14th and the final trade must be done by July 13th, 2007.

I decided to donate the final item(s) or whatever cash value they fetch. I chose East Anglia's Children's Hospices as my charity. You can read more about the charity later.

Now I'm challenging you. Start a trading up project for a charity you'd like to suppoer. Go on - its a lot of fun. You'll have some great conversations. You'll make more people aware of the work the charity does.

And best of all - you'll make them some much-needed money.

Or you might even want to offer a trade for this charity. Its all in a good cause and you might even enjoy it.

How it works

Go on - give it a go...

It can be a lot of fun as well as being a way of raising funds for a charity or community project.

Here's how it works:
  • Find your starting item. Usually something very small but universally use-able. It can be as minor as a paperclip or an egg.
  • Ask for a trade. You can do this in one of two ways - either ask for a specific trade if you know the person has something you could trade. If there's no cost to them its much easier.
  • Alternatively, ask then to think of something they might want to trade.
  • Now ask someone else to trade for the item you've traded for.
  • Keep going.
  • Its amazing what people are willing to trade.
  • This can be done by one person but its probably even more interesting to do it as a group.
  • Work out your final exit. If you end up with one or more items of value at the end how are you going to convert them to funds - auction locally, auction online, ask for a few more trades but specify that you want to trade for money donated to the charity.
  • Above all - have fun with it.
