What use is traffic without eyeballs?

The attraction of autosurfs is that you can set them up and then leave them to run unattended, while you sleep - so generating free hits on your ad site without your devoting time to ad watching in return.

Therein lies the problem - nearly everybody else does the same thing, so your server gets mostly hits from zombies who never buy. A waste of bandwidth in most cases.

Even worse, autosurfs attract the "wrong" sort of publisher - I have more than once downloaded malware from autosurfs. So be careful!

I have never sold anything of value to autosurf traffic. So why bother?

There are 2 possible reasons to consider autosurfs - "Alexa/SEO" and "Traffic Laundry".  See the articles below for explanation and evaluation of these concepts.

ALEXA Rating and Site Valuation

+ possible SEO advantages

Autosurf generated hits to your webpage boost your Alexa rating and so increase the value and credibility of your site. This can be rewarding when negotiating sale of links or even the domain name itself.

Arguably the backlink from the autosurf to your website can't do any harm with the search engines either, UNLESS your autosurf is rated "bad neighorhood" - in which case the backlink is poison.

However, I would not advise automated traffic to artificially boost your site reputation. Apart from moral issues (do cheats really prosper?) the search engines have a fine track record of closing and sanctioning "cheat" loopholes - they employ many fine minds dedicated to that sole aim.

TRAFFIC LAUNDRY

A technique to launder junk traffic into useful traffic

Some autosurfs do net an occasional free subscriber to your account with a Manual Traffic Exchange. Such recruiting can be parlayed into a fund of credits for free advertising with the Manual Exchange - via "finder's bonuses" and as "commission" on any manual surfung done by your downline recruit(s).

Get enough such recruits and they may bring in some recruits of their own, so further boosting your flow of traffic credits.

Your manual exchange traffic credits are redeemed for exposure of your ad to human eyes. A percentage of these "real" viewings may then subscribe to your offer ("bribe") to join your mailing list. A percentage of list subscribers may evenually part with money if pursued relentlessly by autoresponder.

In theory, the "traffic laundry" sequence described can be automated to generate useful traffic without any ongoing cost in time or money.

The practical problem is the drop out rate at each filter - 1% of 1% of 0.1% = one in 10 million. And the autosurf will hang or break a frame many times every 10 million exposures - so the "laundry" is not 100% automatic and effort free.

In my experience, the traffic laundry concept works (eventually) but is not worth the effort involved. There are many superior ways to generate traffic, so check out the alternatives first.
