Training Cockatiel Birds To Talk - The Basics
If you want a talking cockatiel it is best to buy a male bird. Male birds are far easier to teach to talk than females. This is because vocalization is part of the male birds mating ritual. Also, young birds are easier to teach to talk than older ones. Determining the sex of a very young bird is difficult. You may need a vet to help with this.
Training Cockatiel Birds To Talk - The Process
First be aware that a bird will not repeat a sound if it is not interested in the way it sounds. Also birds respond better to a higher pitched voice, such as the female voice.
Cover three sides of the birds cage so the cockatiel will focus on you, during your training session. Remove toys from the cage so the bird will not be distracted. Each session should be about 10 minutes long. Start with one word, one or two syllables long. Repeat the word in a normal speaking voice over and over again for about 10 minutes. Have a training session 3 to 4 times a day. Give your cockatiel treats from your hand as you conduct the training session, this makes him enjoy it more and even look forward to the training sessions. Be patient, it can take a bit of time.
You can also make a tape of your voice repeating the word over and over that you are trying to teach and as you play the tape occassionally give the bird a treat. Training tapes such as this are available for purchase also.
