Enjoy your self-planned traveling based on your interests. First identify your interests, then search the Internet for the activities that suit your interests. Find out places that these activities are happening. Plan what you want to do in these places. Book accommodation to stay around these places. Go for it! In order to maximize the satisfaction of your trips, get hold of information either by buying a tour book or surfing the Internet to get detail information for places that you plan to visit.

5 things you shouldn't miss! 

Local places of interest - it may be the temples, churches, mosques etc.
Local art galleries - visual arts, sculptures, studios, etc.
Local food - the simple restaurants, the markets, and a good dinner.
Local dance - buy a ticket to a cultural performance of known applause.

The Eyewitness Travel Guide is one book which I would not missed buying before traveling. It is been used to get get myself introduced to the place I plan to travel to. Then look at the regions of the country of city that I plan to go to, go into the details of the places of interest, get to know the background to these places, from here I formulate mu itinerary.

    SHPoh has been traveling arounf Asia, Middle East and Europe on his own. He likes to plan his own trip and move around to places of his own interests. By doing this, he is satisfied particularly by mixing with the common people on the ground.
