It'll soon be time for vacations or trips for holidays and when traveling in the car all you seem to hear is "Are we there yet?".  Here are some games to play in the car while traveling that will help pass the time and keep the kids busy.

Please rate my lens, bookmark it and come back soon.

Find the License Plate

What you need:
copies of the United States with blank states
box of crayons or colored markers

During the trip tell each person when they spot a license plate from a certain state, they can color it in with a crayon or marker. At the end of the trip the person with the most states colored in wins.

Find the Vehicle

Everyone tries to find the following vehicles:

Fire Engine
Cement mixer
ATV (all terrain vehicle)
Motor Home
A truck hauling cows
A Volkswagon

at the end of the trip the person who has seen the most vehicles wins. You can count the vehicles more than once if you see them more than once.

Spy the Color

One person finds a color in the car and says "I spy something red". The first person who guesses the item will get to name the next color.

Word Search

what you need:
pads or pieces of paper
pencils

Have everyone write down all the smaller words each can find contained within the words:

Vacation
Mountains
California
Caribbean
Afghanistan

the person with the most words wins.

Slug Bug

Look for Volkswagon Beetles. When you see one, yell "Slug Bug". Keep track and the first person who spots 10 wins

Who Has the Best Memory

One person starts by identifying something they see while traveling. The next person repeats that word and adds one they see. It keeps going with each person repeating all the words and adding one. If you get a word out of order you are out of the game.

Alphabet

All passengers search for letters of the alphabet (on road signs) starting with A and going to Z. There is no winner, it just keeps everyone busy looking for words and making the time go by faster.

Travel Word Game

what you need:

pads or sheet of paper
pencil

give your passenger words like:
t r a v e l
and have then write down words that start with each of the letters of your word. (like: train, race, apple, vacation, evening, lady) First one through wins.
You can then pick another word

Our family has created an iPhone app with instructions for 100 games families can play in the car...many of them brand-new. Guessing games, singing games, games using the radio...lots of categories, a spinner...no equipment (except for the pencil and paper games). Cool thing is that once you choose a game and learn it...you can put the iPhone or iPod touch away!

Kathy Peel, family coach on AOL, just recommended it today, in her article Road Trip Sanity part 2 - today's ParentDish blog. "Love how one mom turned car games into iphone app" http://tinyurl.com/mbxolo
