Programs & Resources for Troubled Youth
No one ever said raising a teenager would be a piece of cake. Even parents of the most well-behaved and well-adjusted teenagers deal with mood swings, boundary pushing, and adjustments to higher responsibilites like driving. These things in themselves are difficult for both teenagers and their parents, and they may cause lots of tension and even outright fighting in a house full of hormonal kids. This tension can usually be dealt with through patience, setting boundaries, and giving a teenager space and time to grow and change.
Formal Programs & Centers are there to help
But if your teen is struggling with behavior that goes above and beyond what is normally expected of a person of his or her age, you may need to take more drastic measures. Cutting, eating disorders, lying, sexual promiscuity, and drug and alcohol abuse are just a few signs that your teenager might be heading down a very dangerous path. Whether these behaviors stem from emotional angst, pure rebellion, or the wrong set of friends, you may have to deal with them through more formal means.Luckily, there are many compassionate programs for troubled teens available across the country today. These programs are based on different ideas, but one of them may be an excellent way to help your troubled teen learn and grow through these tough years. While you'll have to check out the regulations and advantages of different troubled teen programs in your area, here is a basic list of the formal programs available to families who are dealing with troubled teenagers:
Outpatient and Group Therapy
Sometimes youth who are dealing with issues of self-image and self-esteem, especially, may benefit from a counseling type of atmosphere in which they interact with other teens and young adults who are going through the same problems. Private or Boarding School
There are probably several private schools in your area, and if you feel like your troubled youth is suffering because of the influence of unsavory friends or a lack of academic regulation, a private school might be just the right solution. For more extreme cases, a boarding school might help a troubled youth to cut off all ties to his negative past. Military Boot Camps
These programs, based on military ideals and discipline, are typically short-term - just a few weeks or a couple of months at most. The right kind of boot camp can be great for teens who need to realize that their choices have consequences, as all choices in a boot camp will be quickly rewarded or punished with appropriate action. Theraputic Wilderness Programs
These programs are meant, first of all, to take troubled youth away from those things that are negatively impacting them on a daily basis - television, peer pressure, even a rough family life - and to put them someplace where they have to learn to be themselves. Wilderness programs can be mentally, emotionally, and physically challenging for troubled youth, but they are a good option for solving some of the underlying issues with troubled teenagers and young adults.
