History of Troy University

Troy University's tradition of teaching excellence dates to its founding on February 26, 1887, when an act of the Alabama Legislature established Troy State Normal School as an institution to train teachers for Alabama's schools.

In 1893, the school was renamed Troy State Normal College. The Normal College offered extension courses for teachers and granted teaching certificates until 1929, when the State Board of Education changed the charter of the institution and renamed it Troy State Teacher's College.

The decade of the 1950s also marked the University's long relationship with the United States Military, as extension courses were offered on nearby bases, first at Fort Rucker, near Dothan, and later at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery.

In April of 2004 the Board of Trustees voted to drop "State" from the University's name to better reflect the institution's worldwide mission. And in  August 2005, all TROY campuses were again unified under one accreditation.

Troy Distance Learning

How is eCampus different from a traditional classroom setting?
Courses offered through Troy University's eCampus have the same high academic standards as other Troy University courses. Students must complete the same or comparable requirements as students in traditional classes. Because of the flexible scheduling, you must be responsible, self-motivated and a self-starter to complete required assignments on time.

What is Distance Learning?
Distance learning enables any student to earn a fully-accredited college education. Our distance learning programs are growing rapidly due to the increased demand from working adult students for courses delivered on an "any time-any place" basis.

What are Distance Learning courses like?
Several course delivery methods are used to reach students around the world. The courses are Internet-based and use email, electronic bulletin boards, chat rooms, online mini-lectures and other Web-based interactive lessons.
