Where Dutch History and Modern Community Converge

The Albany Tulip Festival is one of Albany's largest events, bringing thousands into Washington Park to view and celebrate the tulips, and the Dutch history of the area. Thousands and thousands of tulips of all types and colors make this event absolutely beautiful. This year we will celebrated the 61th Annual Albany Tulip Festival, on May 9-10, 2009, as always on Mother's Day Weekend.

"Night Fire"

~ The Burning Tulip ~

2008 brought a new tradition to the Albany Tulip Festival. This new element is called "Night Fire". It is a dramatic art installation floating in Washington Park Lake, with a 15-foot-tall steel tulip emerging from a burning structure.

Mayor Jennings said the inspiration for "Night Fire" came from two sources: the WaterFire in Providence and the Burning Man Festival held every year in the Nevada desert. "Night Fire" is a joint effort among the city, local artists and businesses, national and regional underwriters and an Oscar-winning pyrotechnics engineer.

Albany artist, Steven Rolf Kroeger, designed the tulip and lily pads. The while the burnable structure wwas made by Johnstown sculptor Torrance E. Fish. Both artists were selected by Albany Center Gallery. Denise Anderson, a College of St. Rose graduate will compose music especially for this event.

For more information on the project read the Fox News story on the 2008 big reveal and check out these photos of the burning of the structure around the floating tulip.

Tulip Festivals

The Tulip Festivals are held in several North American cities, most often ones with Dutch heritage, including Albany, New York; Ottawa, Ontario; Holland, Michigan; Orange City, Iowa; Pella, Iowa; Mount Vernon, Washington; and Woodburn, Oregon. The tulips are considered a welcome harbinger of spring, and a tulip festival permits residents to see them at their best advantage. The festivals are also popular tourist attractions. The tulips are displayed throughout the cities. In certain years the peak of tulips does not coincide with the actual festival due to climatic conditions.
