What Is Turbulence Training Anyways?

A Look Into What This Exercise Program Trys to Accomplish

Turbulence Training is an exercise program based upon interval training and bodyweight resistance training. Turbulence, try to combine the best of both worlds into a 3 times a week, 45 minutes program. The science behind this program backed by some recent peer reviewed studies. Lets look at each part first that Turbulence Training covers. I review the Male program, which may have some differences, but the concept is pretty much the same.

What Is Interval Training?

Interval training is a varied speed cardio routine. The best example is to think of a track. On it, you sprint the 2 straightaways, and in the half-circles, parts you lightly jog.You do this for about 1-2 miles(4-8 laps around the track). Another example is on a exercise bike. You sprint on the bike for 2 minutes, slow bike for 1, and repeat this for 20 minutes. In regular cardio, you just operate in a optimal range for your heart rate(at least 60, up to 80% maximum), and continue it up to 45 minutes, followed by a cool down. The studies that have recently come up, show that interval training, while you don't burn as many calories in a session, as a ordinary cardio routine, you end up having more calories burned at rest, for the rest of the day, due to its effect on the metabolism. In regular cardio, you just end up burning the calories you did during that session, to an extent(you stop burning fat effectively after 30-45 minutes, as your body begins to use muscle mass and sugars/carbs).
If your an absolute beginner, in a way you end up interval training, since your stamina isn't built up yet. So, you end up doing an half backed interval program(run for one minute, walk for two), so having a formal interval program might be better, to gain better results faster. Turbulence Training is a bit different by having you do cardio only 3 times a week, versus 6 times a week, in traditional leaning out bodybuilding programs. Also, to gain better results, with the resistance training section, you do cardio last, which helps you keep more of your strength, vs. doing cardio first, which will drain your energy levels and make it harder to push yourself to the level you need with bodybuilding.

Body Weight Training?

I heard about Weightlifting before..whats the difference?

The second part of Turbulence Training, is a bodyweight program. The program first focuses on core multi-muscles movements, to build up strength and size, and moves on from there. Most movements are done with your own bodyweight(to start off with), and do not require the use of any fancy equipment at the gym(which in most cases, may hurt your gains). Later you can opt to use dumbbells. The use of your own bodyweight, instead of weights, means your focus is on building true physical Strength. By using weights, you end up only making the muscle appear larger. While Mass building can be a later focus(and I hope it will be for you, due to the other benfits of lifting weights, which I list later.)

The benefits of lifting weights at all ages(even if your 60 plus!) has major support in science. After the age of 30, you lose about one pound of muscle per year. By protecting against this lost, by training, your life can have a better standard of living at older ages. One pound of muscle takes up more space than one pound of fat. In men, Low testosterone levels can wreak havoc on everything to memory, to fat loss, and your general mood; not just sexual performance. Overweight males are effected by these low levels. By lifting weights and activity, it will help counter this, by encouraging production a bit.

The Trouble With Some Exercise Programs

Most programs I found are very time consuming, asking you to work a group a muscles once a week(taking up to sometimes 45 minutes to an hour), for nearly 6 days a week, with a cardio program of at least 30 minutes or even two 30 minutes sessions a day(if your leaning out, not just building muscle). This type of program is mainly for focused towards hardgainers. It is old fashioned, but it does work, if you have the time and the energy to take on such a task.
Turbulence Training is also flexible since could be done at home since your using your own resistance and outside for your cardio, instead of the use of a gym.

A Note About Dieting and Nutrition

Turbulence Training will not work well without a good diet. Exercise will never make up for bad dieting! While a bonus book is included, that focuses on eating whole foods(preferably organic) sources, and diet that promotes a healthy balance of protein(preferably, animals sources) and good carbs(the slower burning ones like brown rice, and sweet potatoes) should give you good results. Personally, I tried a low carb diet with Turbulence Training to have a focus on weight loss. The low carb diet ended up making me feel a bit run-down, but produced steady results. To play it safe, I recommend a more balanced approach.

Final Thoughts on Turbulence Training

While any fitness magazine can give you an interval and resistance(with and without the use of weights) training program, they tend to be less focused on the beginner, or seem very out of touch with them, by creating a program that might not focus on results, just a routine, to hold you down till the next issue. While I won't say they outright scam people(otherwise, subscriptions would go fast down the hole and less advertisers would follow), they do need to create content each month. They sometimes, while promoting science, they run on old theories about building muscle mass, that somewhat works.
They also might sometimes try to promote new gimmicky moves with weights, that isolate muscle groups, that are not shaped really yet, or the use of equipment, such as swiss balls(or other unbalanced surfaces) and kettle balls, that have no use to a beginner exerciser(in the case of balance balls, some are debating if they benefit beginners, since the focus of creating balance is the point, instead of proper form of the exercise performed on them).
Turbulence Training isn't exactly going to give you results overnight. Like most exercise programs, results may not be seen for about 3 weeks or so, but it will do it in less time spent exercising than most programs. It will help you build a strong, healthy foundation for exercise, without being too boring. It includes a lot of bonus materials to keep you busy changing up your program as you progress.

For more Information, Check out the Turbulence Training Website, it includes testimonial pictures, and a further breakdown on the program.

And as always, before starting any lifestyle change such as a diet and exercise program, such as this one, check with your doctor first, to be on the safe side.

New! Turbulance Training For Abs

A new module just released!

On July 20th, 2008, The creator of Turbulence Training just released a new awesome program dedicated to developing abs. Its called(obviously) Turbulence training bodyweight abs, and its available at http://www.turbulencetrainingforabs.com/

One cool feature I like is the beginner section program that is crunch free. If you hated crunches, and felt that was the only way you can develop your abs, be prepared to be surprised! More information can be found at his blog
www.turbulencetraining.blogspot.com/

Due to the newness of this program, I haven't found time to review it all of it just yet(I am about only 4 weeks just into the Turbulence Training program), but if you already bought and used Turbulence Training, I recommend you check it out.
