The season is upon us! The cooking has already begun, and will continue until well into the New Year. Pies, stuffings, sweet potatoes...bet you can smell it from space.
But what will be cooking in your kitchen? Will it be a crisp bird with giblets? What about a savory Tofurkey with wild mushroom stuffing? Maybe a deep fried Tur-duck-en?
Here's a lens to help you decide and debate!
This lens is deidcated to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It's entered into the Squidoo Thanksgiving Cookoff (for Charity). If it gets selected, they will get $1000. I hope you enjoy -- and if you do, don't be shy, spread the word!

One blustery eve in 1995, a man named Seth Tibbot, from Turtle Island Foods, saw his totally fake creation come to er..life?
In the heart of the Thanksgiving table lay a tofurkey. Made of no living creature, not a wishbone to be found...

Okay, well according to their website, this is how is really happened"
In 1995, the Turtle Island Foods expanded its product line to include a tofu-based meat alternative called "Tofurky®". Seth's motivation for "inventing" Tofurky products was simple. "For many years my vegetarian friends and I struggled with what to eat at Thanksgiving. We shared many epic failures and disappointments. There was the stuffed pumpkin that was ok, and the "gluten roast" which had three pages of instructions, took all day to prepare and could not be cut with a chain saw."
Turtle Island Foods teamed up with The Higher Taste, in Portland, Oregon to create a turkey alternative, which they named "Tofurky®". This prototype was a complete holiday meal, and consisted of a stuffed tofu roast, 8 tempeh drummettes (apparently a Tofurky® had eight legs) and a pint of nutritional yeast gravy.

The History of our Turkey
Think of the bio-effects there!!??

The first time Thanksgiving was celebrated nationally was in 1789, when President George Washington declared Thursday, Nov. 26, a holiday.
Some report that it was Queen Elizabeth that set the tradition of a goose upon harvest celebration.
Then in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared that the fourth Thursday of November would be celebrated as Thanksgiving.
Every year the president is given a turkey to eat for the holiday, and since 1989, he has "pardoned" the bird - allowing it to live rather than eat it.

Have a traditional Thanksgiving: Serve Venison!
The most detailed description of the "First Thanksgiving" comes from Edward Winslow from A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, in 1621:

At which time, among other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed upon our governor, and upon the captain, and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."
I'm thankful that you read this all the way to the bottom. Thanks so much!
