T WILIGHT, an action-packed, modern-day love story between a teenage girl Bella Swan (Kristin Stewart) and a vampire, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), is directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Bella, a little bit different since childhood, doesn't care about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother marries a baseball pro, Bella goes to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, and takes her attitude with her. She is uncomfortable with all the attention she receives as the "new girl" and is attracted to the withdrawn and handsome Edward, who actively avoids her. Edward's family is quite different from the "white bread" families in the rest of the town. Bella is intrigued by the differences and it is not long until she figures out Edward is a vampire. Unafraid, Bella confronts Edward about his true identity and finds out his dichotomous treatment of her is due to his attraction to her and fear that he won't be able to stop himself from sucking her blood. Bella meets Edward's family and learns they are "vegetarian" vampires that feed only on animals, not humans. Bella is the soul mate Edward has been searching for and Edward is the hero Bella loves unconditionally, even to the point of being willing to give her life to be his eternally. Bella and Edward's forbidden love affair is put to the test when a band of vampires James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) arrive in Forks and feed on several people. James, the consumate hunter, becomes obsessed with finding and feeding on Bella after discovering her relationship with Edward. To save her life, Bella must hurt those she loves the most and rely on the Cullen family to save her from James who will stop at nothing to kill her.

La Push, Washington, is a small community located near the town of Forks and houses the Quileute tribe. Forks is the home of Bella's family friend Jacob Black, a Quileute tribe member. Author Stephenie Meyer uses the Quileute tribe in the first book as a plot device to tell Bella, and the reader, that the Cullens are vampires. In New Moon, the second book, she reveals a genetic quirk that allows the Quileutes to turn into werewolves when vampires are in the area.
The 2,000 square mile area of La Push is bordered on the north and west by over 100 miles of saltwater shores, and to the south and east by alpine meadows and rain forest valleys. Over 200 miles of wild rivers criss-cross the region, providing healthy runs of native salmon and steel head. This environment makes a suitably unpredictable setting in which the vampires and werewolves battle.
