Twitter For Business

Twitter is an interactive microblogging network where you can meet, connect and share with people from all over the world.

Microblogging is similar to blogging where a person gets to share thoughts, ideas, products in an online environment.

What makes Twitter a microblog? You have only 140 characters to use in each post. That means letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation marks, the whole works-only 140 characters.

140 characters means posts are short, quick and to the point.

What do people talk about on Twitter?
Everything from what they had for breakfast to breaking news. In fact Twitter has fast become the place for breaking news.

News That First Broke On Twitter
Plane down in the Hudson? Twitter scoop.
Earthquake in the UK? Twitter followers first to hear
Hotel takeover in India? Twitter updated as it unfolded

What does this have to do with your business?
As a business owner you know networking is the way to meet people which leads to relationships which leads to business. Twitter is another tool to use.

Will Twitter fit every person and every business?
No. Check Twitter out and see if it may work for you. Don't necessarily go with your first impression. Don't get caught up in the stuff. Because I understand most of us don't care what people had for breakfast today. That is unless you are a restaurant, grocery store owner or have something to do with the food business.

If you let yourself get stuck on what someone had for breakfast you'll miss the benefits of Twitter. So keep on reading or open your own Twitter account. It only takes a few minutes.

What Twitter Is

And Is Not

It's all about relationships. Twitter is a way to connect quickly and easily with people in your marketplace.

Twitter isn't about shouting about your business or promoting all the time your specials and events. Twitter is not about advertising though by participating you do promote yourself and your business.

If you continually promote yourself and your products like a billboard, you'll have a difficult time finding people to listen to you.

Think back to a networking event when some person walked up to you trying to sell their product as soon as they started talking. You looked for the fastest escape route. Same goes for Twitter.

Think of Twitter as a giant networking event. Instead of just a few people there are hundreds of thousands of possible ones to meet. Now are you going to connect with everyone? Of course not! But odds are you're going to find some interesting ones.

Building Your Brand On Twitter

Twitter is a conversation, that means two way communication.

Be real, though it's convenient to use automated replies to people, people don't want to talk to a bot.

Chat with people. Get involved in conversations. When people ask questions, answer if you have the answer.

Skip the auto-response follow message with a link or "free gift" at your website People believe the saying beware of strangers bearing gifts. You've just met the person, let the relationship develop. Once you're involved in the conversation, people will be more than willing to click on your links.

Become known as the expert within your niche. Offer good links to information in your niche. Share your expertise. You're not going to give away everything you know. Besides, how could you do that in 140 characters?

Bottom Line? Interact, connect and provide a reason to talk with you.

What Can A Twitter Account Do For You And Your Business?

If you look beyond the breakfast tweets, Twitter can provide:

  • information about your brand, competitors and your industry
  • the ability to do real time research,
  • a means for doing real time customer service
  • a way to quickly and easily introduce people to the content of your blog or website
  • get you past some industry gatekeepers.
