In The Name Of Love
The band is actively involved in improving human rights around the world with organizations such as Make Poverty History, Live 8 and Bono's DATA campaign. The band has also done several other concerts in support of a variety of campaigns including Live AID, Net Aid, Self Aid, War Child and The Big One, a peace concert. I hope you enjoy the video and music links and any purchases from this lens go 100% to The Action Against Hunger.
U2 recorded a John Lennon song for a CD compilation to raise funds for Amnesty International.
They also contributed a cover of Cole Porter's Night And Day for the Red Hot and Blue AIDS charity album.
It's quite amazing how much one band has been involved in charity and the work they have done as individuals. It's why they are one of my favorite bands. I admire that they have done work to help numerous charities and not just one.
In the year 2008 Bono still continues to lead the fight for charities on an international level and has inspired many celebrities to join him.
The Virtual Concert Contest
Music to Raise Money = A Good Time By All
U2talks about the One Campaign in every concert they have. Coldplay talks about
Oxfam International. A stage with thousands of screaming adoring fans is a
good time to promote a good cause.
Remember "We Are the World"? Farm Aid? Band Aid? All hosted to raise
money for causes. How? Bands got together to perform, raise awareness and
donate money. What a great idea!
Summer is concert season. It seems like all bands go on tour. Nothing like
live music on a warm summer night!
What if you could host a benefit concert? You have a cause that's important to
you. What better way to have it announced than by your favorite performer in a
room full of people who paid big bucks to get there?
This is the point of the Virtual
Concert Week on Squidoo.
Who would you pick and what cause would you raise money for? Make
a lens and tell us about it!

"ONE" of My Favorite Charities

While reading the efforts of http://www.netaid.org/
I noticed a logo on the site " One the Campaign to Make Poverty
History" they are partnered with many of the charities listed on squidoo. http://www.one.org/partners/
ONE is Americans of all beliefs and every walk of life - united as ONE - to
help make poverty history. They are a campaign of over 2.4 million people and
growing from all 50 states and over 100 of America's most well-known and
respected non-profit, advocacy and humanitarian organizations. As ONE, we are
raising public awareness about the issues of global poverty, hunger, disease and
efforts to fight such problems in the world's poorest countries.
ONE is nonpartisan; there's only one side in the fight against global AIDS and
extreme poverty. Working on the ground in communities, colleges and churches
across the United States, ONE members both educate and ask America's leaders to
increase efforts to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty, from the U.S. budget
and presidential elections to specific legislation on debt cancellation,
increasing effective international assistance, making trade fair, and fighting
corruption. Everyone can join the fight. The goal of ending poverty may seem
lofty, but it is within our reach if we take action together as one. You can
start now by joining ONE and pledging your voice to the fight against extreme
poverty and global AIDS. http://www.one.org

Early Days
Bono
Born Paul Hewsen May 10, 1960... nicknamed Bono Vox by a schoolmate which is an alteration of Bonavox meaning good voice in latin and he remained Bono from that day on.One day in 1976, he answered an ad posted on a bulletin board at the Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, asking for anyone who was interested in forming a band to meet after school at the house of one Larry Mullen Junior.
With the younger, no-nonsense Larry serving as the talented drumming catalyst for the group's formation, the other members filled out what was to eventually become U2, one of the world's most memorable and famous rock groups: a gifted guitarist/guitar builder named Dave Evans, whose eventual nickname "The Edge" (by varying accounts) came from either the shape of his skull or his low-key personality; an amateur bassist named Adam Clayton, whose caftan coats, tinted glasses and use of such cool words as "gig" and "amp" made him seem like he knew more about music than he actually did; and finally, Bono...who couldn't play guitar or really carry a tune (yet), but whose earnest charm, intense poetic songwriting, and theatrical persona ultimately won him the position as the band's frontman and songwriter.
Bono was inspired to get involved in charity work after seeing The Secret Policeman's Ball in 1979. In 1986 he helped organize Amnesty International's Conspiracy Of Hope tour alongside Sting, who was one of the Secret Policeman's Ball performers seen by Bono, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, and Bryan Adams. He also got involved in the Band Aid and Live Aid projects which were organized by Bob Geldof - another Secret Policeman's Ball performer, and later helped Geldof organize the 2005 Live 8 project.
His first contact with charitable causes was in 1986, prior to the Conspiracy of Hope tour, when World Vision invited him to Ethiopia. While there, Bono developed an education program with his wife, Ali, that used one-act plays and songs to spread information on health, hygiene, and other issues. He released a book of photos he took during the trip called "String Of Pearls".
He followed his trip to Ethipoia with visits to Nicaragua and El Salvador with Sanctuary to draw attention to the conflicts and help children.
He wrote a song called Silver and Gold for Steve Van Zandt's Artists Against Apartheid, and participated in Van Zandt's anti-apartheid single Sun City.
Bono and The Edge attended the Festival Against Racism in Hamburg, Germany, in 1993. The event consisted of a concert, a press conference, a theatrical event, and a debate on the subject of anti-racism.
The singer has been a leader in the fight against poverty, and has helped to create the ONE Campaign, DATA, (RED) and EDUN, a clothing company which is striving to stimulate trade with poverty stricken countries.
He was on Forbes' Generous Celebrity List for his work with Debt AIDS Trade Africa (DATA) against the spread of AIDS and for debt relief in Africa, participation in fundraising concerts like Live 8, and his donation of $50,000 to One in Four Ireland, a charity that helps survivors of sexual abuse.
Bono has received 3 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, and was knighted in 2007.
He met with President Sarkozy of France early in 2008, to discuss issues brought to light by DATA.
"Within the meeting the President not only promised to restore 20 million Euros cut from the Global Fund to fight AIDS TB and malaria, he also said he would send through a plan to restore promised French aid trajectories in the next few weeks.

The Music
The Edge
Dave "The Edge" Evans was born in 1961, in Barking, Essex, in East London. When he was one year old, he and his family moved to Dublin, where he has lived ever since.
The Edge's unique guitar playing makes up U2's trademark. In the summer of 2003, he was part of Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", at number 24. He also supplies backing vocals for U2 and he sang the lead vocal on "Van Diemen's Land" (Rattle and Hum), "Numb" (Zooropa) and the first half of the song "Seconds" from (War).
The ''Icons of Music'' auction benefiting Music Rising, a charity The Edge co-founded to replace musical equipment lost or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
''No one could ever come close to repaying the debt of those who have established this form (of music) that we all take totally for granted, this hybrid of European melody and African-American rhythm that's given us jazz and R&B and rock 'n' roll,'' he told The Associated Press by phone from Dublin, Ireland, where he and his U2 band mates are crafting a new album. ''There's something powerful about musicians giving instruments they own to an auction to aid musicians who are going through a particularly difficult time.''
The Edge created Music Rising in 2005 with record producer Bob Ezrin and Gibson chairman Henry Juszkiewicz to preserve New Orleans' rich musical culture after the devastation of Katrina. ''A lot of musicians were forced to leave the city, leaving behind their instruments and record collections, everything they needed to do what they do,'' The Edge, 46, said. ''The kind of organic community music academy that was so supportive of handing down the traditions of this music from generation to generation was really vulnerable.'' Music Rising has provided grants to replace instruments and equipment for 2,700 professional musicians and 50,000 students and church parishioners to date.

Adam Clayton
Besides being the bassist of the band, Adam was also U2's first manager, he would book shows for U2 and send around demo tapes. He kept this role until Paul McGuinness, a more experienced manager, was hired.Adam has achieved a great deal in his career, besides being part of one of the greatest bands in the world. In both 2001 and 2002, he was winner of the Best Bassist award in the Orville H. Gibson Guitar Award. Also, Adam Clayton played bass on "Still Water" and "Jolie Louise" on the Daniel Lanois 1989 album Acadie. Adam and Larry Mullen recorded soundtrack, including the theme song, for the 1996 remake of the movie Mission: Impossible.
Larry Mullen
Lawrence Mullen was born in 1961 in Artane, which is located in the north side of Dublin. He had a tragic childhood, losing both his little sister Mary (1973) and his mother Maureen (1977). Larry's love for music first started at the age of 8 when he started learning the piano. He switched to drumming however in 1971 and took classes with Ireland's best-known drummer, Joe Bonnie. In the mid-70s Larry began his signature military-drumming style and became a member of the Artane Boys' Band, a military-style fife and drum band. The marching military sound made him develop a drumming style that to this day is characteristic for the music of U2.
His award-winning career includes 22 Grammy Awards, the Rory Gallagher Musician of the Year Award from Hot Press magazine, eight Brit Awards, a Golden Globe award as well as many others from a variety of music magazines, trade publications and music television networks. He was nominated with band mates for an Oscar® in 2003 for "The Hands That Built America," the same song that won the Golden Globe that year. He has also served as a judge for the Shortlist Music Prize. In 2000 he accepted the Freedom of Dublin award.

- They have been playing for many years now and they could be considered as one of the greatest bands ever, one of the main cause of their success is that they donate their a lot of money to those that are in need.
5 stars for your Hard Rock Lens.
