The University of Massachusetts Boston otherwise known as UMass Boston is one of five schools in the University of Massachusetts system. It is located in Boston on the beautiful Boston Harbor. It has the distinction of being the only doctoral granting public university in the academic center of Boston. The school is a testament to what urban educational institutions can be in this country. Considered among the University's many strengths, the University community is a microcosm of the world and its diversity. It is difficult to find more ethnic, age, socio-economic, and life experience diversity in any one place.

History of UMass Boston

The University of Massachusetts Boston was established in 1964. However, its roots can be traced back to the 1850s with the creation of the Girls' High School in Boston; a school to train teachers of the elementary grades. Ultimately this became the Teachers College of the City of Boston in 1922. This institution was renamed twice more: State College of Boston in 1960 and Boston State College in 1968. Meanwhile the hitherto separate University of Massachusetts Boston opens its doors at the new Boston Harbor campus in 1974. Shortly after this, Boston State College joins the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1982, making it what it is today.
