"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer," Obama told a massive crowd of cheering supporters in Chicago's Grant Park Tuesday night, following his winning the race for President of the United States.

Barack Obama made history November 4th. The 47-year-old Democratic junior senator from Illinois swept to victory over his Republican opponent, Arizona Sen. John McCain, building an Electoral College majority of at least 338 votes.

"It's been a long time coming, but tonight because of what we did on this day, in this election, on this defining moment, change is coming to America." With his victory, Obama, the Hawaiian-born son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas, is poised to turn the page on Republican policies of the last eight years.

Obama's victory is widely being reported as "the biggest for news Web sites since measuring began three years ago." The Web's emerging dominance as a prime source for news was demonstrated as several online news sites, including those produced by MSNBC, CNN and ABC News, said that Tuesday ranked as their most-visited day ever.

Obama In Hawaii: The High School Years

After returning to Hawaii in 1971 at age 10, Barack Obama attended Punahou Academy where he graduated with honors in 1979.

He lived with his maternal grandparents and his classmates at his high school described him as "a pleasant, if undistingushed student." He seemed happiest on the basketball court (he still tries to get in the odd game of hoops). Obama's homeroom teacher at the Punahou School, Eric Kusunoki, said about him: "He had the same exact mannerisms then as he does now, When he walked up to give that speech at the Democratic convention, we recognized him right away by the way he walked. He was well liked by everybody, a very charismatic guy."

Following high school, Barack Obama Obama studied political science at Occidental College in Los Angeles and completing his degree at Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1983.

Barack Obama: Harvard Law Grad And Chicago Civil Rights Organizer

Obama moved to Chicago in 1985 where he worked as a community organizer with low-income residents in Chicago's Roseland community and the Altgeld Gardens public housing development on the city's South Side. He went to Harvard Law School in 1988, was elected editor of the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum laude in 1991.

After law school, Obama returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer, joining the firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School. And he helped organize voter registration drives during Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign.

In 1995, Obama wrote an autobiography called Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. And he earned a Grammy for the audio version of the book.

In 1996 Barack Obama stepped onto the political stage when he was elected to the Illinois State Senate as a Democrat. Obama worked with both Democrats and Republicans in drafting legislation on ethics, expanded health care services and early childhood education programs for the poor. He also created a state earned-income tax credit for the working poor.

In 2000, Obama tried unsuccessfully to unseat four-term Democratic incumbent candidate Bobby Rush in the primary for U. S. House of Representatives.

Who's On The Short List For Obama's Cabinet?

His chief of staff has already been named: Rahm Emanuel, the tough Chicago congressman who is a major political operative. And his campaign strategist, David Axelrod, has accepted the job of senior White House adviser. There is also speculation he will retain Republican Robert Gates in the job of defence secretary.

There's even talk of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger getting named to President-elect Obama's inner cabinet as energy secretary.
