I once drove from Florida all the way to Boston. Then I drove from Florida through Texas, all the way to northern California -- with a CAT in the car! :) Road trips are fun!

The more planning you do for a road trip the more enjoyable the outcome is likely to be. This lens is a great start for planning a great road trip.

This is a great lens. I love road trips, and this got me all nostalgic reading it. You see some pretty interesting stuff on the road.

Amazing article. Very rich content. Sorry, I'd say more but I need to go pack the car. :-)

Brings back wonderful memories or our performance tours in the USA where we rented a camper and went east to west, south to north and indeed staying in the parks was stunning. Rightfully a Lens Of The Day.

What a fun page! I used to go on lots of roadtrips. When we lived in UT, I drove several times to and from my parents home in South Florida. Fun times! :)

A wonderful travel lens and so many great tips. I plan to retire soon and will be putting these tips to good use. I have traveled a lot in my younger years and can not pick a favorite state as I find something to like no matter where I go.
  • jimmyworldstar Dec 3, 2011 @ 3:30 pm | delete
What a detailed lens! I've taken a road trip up the West Coast from Southern California all the way up to Vancouver B.C. I stayed locally in hostels as much as I could and visited plenty of natural history sites like the mountains and hills in Washington state. San Francisco and Portland had their own local culture and beauty to offer too.
  • flycatcher Nov 23, 2011 @ 10:09 pm | delete
Wow, feel like I've been across your country and never left my chair - great job on this lens!

Excellent suggestions for traveling! Although I would like to suggest that the type of climate that we have here in Seattle is referred to as a "Marine" cliimate, much like the coastal areas of England. We do not have a "Mediterranean" climate, as that would imply much warmer temperatures thoughout the year. Thanks for all the great information!
  • cffutah Oct 19, 2011 @ 8:59 pm | delete
thing I like about this lens is it gets into your mind that driving and road tripping is fun! 'thumbs up' for your creative topic.
  • GonnaFly Oct 1, 2011 @ 4:33 am | delete
Wow! So much information here. I could apply some of it to a driving holiday here in Australia.
  • ScamsOfTheHeart Sep 30, 2011 @ 8:50 pm | delete
Nice lens. I'd like more information on taking a road trip traveling with a camper or in an RV. I don't want to stay in hotels or motels. But I am all for road trips, especially weekend getaways or even day trips.
  • TheChartographer Sep 24, 2011 @ 1:18 pm | delete
Detailed and fun article! Makes me long for the carefree open road.

Amazing lens. I'm a big fan of road trips, took a mapless/directionless/GPSless trip in college as my Senior Project. Gotta way the best tips I learned was. Always have cash, always have a tent+sleeping bag, and be sure to have a well stocked cooler.

What an amazing lens Kiwi, very nicely done. You don't have my favorite national park listed, Voyageurs National Park. ~ Would love to take a road trip in and RV and see many parts of this great country, that red convertible would be nice too.
  • danny79 Dec 30, 2010 @ 4:22 am | delete
You forgot the most important part of the road trip, going through San Diego,
that was the only reason i voted California, it is a beautiful state, but still.
I did my road trip 10 years ago, we didnt have navigation or anything, just AAA.
You shouldn't book anything ahead, find a nice motel on the way, and enjoy your time.
On the big cities, save money by booking online, even on the same day.
Thanks for a great lens :)
  • chemknitsblog Dec 25, 2010 @ 9:30 am | delete
Thank you so much for all of the information. I've always wanted to go on a cross country road trip! (I suppose I'll need a car first...) I'm keeping this reference handy.

This is a very good resource for anyone planning a big road trip. I took a 9,000 mile trip around 2/3 of the country in 1998 and in 2000 drove from Massachusetts to Oregon twice - once in my car, once in a UHaul truck with my stuff. I had a DeLorme GPS and laptop during the '98 trip, and several of DeLorme's atlases. I've lensrolled this to my DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer Series lens.

Road trips are great...including for people with arthritis. You can control your moving, stretching, resting and diet better than with other forms of travel, resulting in more effective arthritis treatment, even while traveling.

Great information here. Have not taken a road trip lately. Hoping to take many when I retire. The longest I did was moving from Kansas City to Tampa by way of Atlantic City, That was a very long detour. Stopped at the Air Force museum in Dayton, Ohio along the way. Discovered a lot of America on that great road trip.

What a Great Lens!. This country is full of some many wonderful places to visit, there is no reason to head outside of the United States. One of my goals is to take a train trip across country. Seems like a very unique and under rated way to see the states.

Great lens 'kiwi' - I came here through your roadtrip lens and really appreciate the thoroughness of your checklist. It gets your mind breaking down the mental barriers - ooh I can't go, I'm too busy, etc. I have a great wanderlust too - so I've 5*, faved and joined your fanclub as I'd like to follow updates. Thanks for visiting my lens - I was hoping to run into others with such an interest in travel. Have a good one.

There are some amazing road trips out there. Of course Hwy 1 is always a good one. Plus the old Rte 66 is excellent as well for its nostalgia. The main thing on any road trip is to avoid interstates.

Lots of terrific information. I've traveled from coast to coast in the USA and have used many of your hints (like staying on the outbound side of a city to miss traffic the next morning). Interesting that I found myself on this lens today because I'm about to embark on another road trip myself, from South Carolina, through 3 states in the Midwest, over to NY State, then back to SC.

I enjoyed your video about Tybee Island, GA. I lived on Tybee for 13 years before moving to SC, and my daughter was married at the Tybee Lighthouse! A definite 5* for this delightful lens.
  • kohuether Apr 18, 2009 @ 1:18 pm | delete

You know, I am kind of itching to go on a road trip myself at some point this year. Haven't gone on a major one since 2006 (though have taken some shorter trips since, such as going to Portland for a Church retreat, spending a weekend at Harrison Hot Springs, and going to a friend's wedding in Ellensburg and Spokane). By the way, what did you think of the Seattle area?

Wow! Great lens. I've traveled across the U.S. from coast to coast many, many times. (by the way, you need to add NEW MEXICO www.squidoo.com/new_mexico to your list of states to vote on!). Driving across some of the *biggest states* such as -- Montana (www.squidoo.com/montana_monster), New Mexico, and Colorado (www.squidoo.com/colorado_experience) and so on really tests the stamina of the drivers as well as the folks trapped in the car with them. Your lens helps with giving a perspective on that road trip. Thanks for the great ride!

I like how you put this lens together, especially the fact that you focused on the "how-to" aspect, and not just on the pretty things to see in America. By the way, it would be nice if you could give some tips on travel games, relieving boredom and preventing arguments in the car while traveling with family. :)

Great lens and congratulations on your Lens of the Day award. A quick tip - many men have a "get there" mentality. That can mess up a road trip like this. Men need to realize this mentality, relax and enjoy the drive.
  • poddys May 7, 2008 @ 12:03 pm | delete
Cool, this is definitely a lens and a half to say the least! Very nice job. Of course you skimped a bit on each region - but then the lens would take 15 minutes to load LOL!

From personal experience, I think a laptop is a must. Most hotels in the USA now have free WiFi, except the cheapest of motels, and also many McDonalds, Barnes & Noble, Wendys, Starbucks etc have free WiFi. There are sites where you can look up free WiFi spots in each zip code. With a laptop you can see what hotels are available, book a room, see what's in a certain area etc, plus of course keep in touch with news and what's happening back home via the web and email.

A cell phone is invaluable as you said. If you are visiting the USA from overseas, I recommend a Pay As You Go phone rather than using your normal phone, since the rates are so much cheaper. But watch for the region that they cover.

Hope this helps... This is a great lens and deserves LOTD.
