From the lens United States in the 1800's.

Scenes of Family Life, Early Nineteenth Century
I realize I only touched the tip of the iceberg here with information. I hope to add more resources as I find them. Please feel free to leave me related links or information that you think would be beneficial to those who want to know more about the time period. Thanks!

Looking at everything that the US did in the 19th century it is almost like we felt inadequate at the lack of accomplishments compared to the European powers so we tried to cram a few hundred years of history into one century.

This is an excellent lens on the 1800s time period of America. Big issues like westward expansion, slavery, revolutionary inventions like the telegraph and railroad. You should also cover the Civil War and the period afterwards on Reconstruction to show them how it affected life later on in the 1900s and eventually the Civil Rights Movement.

Hi! Thank you for your comments! We did cover the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era very thoroughly. I used to have the info here, but because the amount was so huge, I created a separate page for it which is listed above. Hopefully it will help others learn about this time, also. :)

The 1800's history came alive for me when I started studying genealogy. I was thrilled to read of my family's migration from the east coast to the midwest, the members who fought in the War of 1812, the Civil War north and south, and their stories of homesteading. It was rich in history.

The 1800's was an interesting time to live, but it was hard.

My children love history from this time period! Right now we are watching both Little House on the Prairie and Dr. Quinn in the evenings with them. Love it! Great lens. Blessed by an Angel and lensrolling to my Little house lens.

Could you imagine living back then? You know, on our travels through Romania a few years back, we actually saw a series of covered wagons transporting gypsies along the road. It made me think of the 1800s!
  • JoyfulPamela Feb 15, 2010 @ 6:28 am | delete
Living back then? Yes and no ~ I always encourage the kids to try to put themselves into the history we are studying. In some ways, things seem much simpler, but in other things, I think I'm way to pampered to go back!

Comprehensive!! Question when did the American accent start to develop, how many Americans would have had one in the 18C?
  • JoyfulPamela Nov 24, 2009 @ 9:50 am | delete
Oooh ~ I like that question! I have no idea of the answer, but I like the question! I suppose the American accent would have started somewhere in the 1700's with the mix of European settlers and Native Americans. The accent as we think of it would have taken decades to develop as it is constantly changing even today. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Please share your knowledge.

I love to read about the people who helped build our country. Benjamin Franklin is my favorite, but people like Annie Oakley and John James Audubon are fascinating as well.
