Ranked #28,604 in Travel & Places, #676,179 overall
Sir Winston Churchill who was once the Prime minister of England was so awed by the beauty of Uganda that he famously described it as "the Pearl of Africa". Uganda is indeed a land of rich and great diversity; occupying only a tiny part of the continent of Africa, about the size of the isle of Great Britain, this country has over 1010 recorded species of birds that is half the total number of bird species recorded in the whole of the African continent. This is due in part to its geographical location within the continent and the world as a whole.
Located in both hemispheres of the earth, the equator runs across this garden of Eden with most of it lying in the northern half of the globe. it consists of both equatorial rain forests and Savannah grasslands which are a transition from the semi-arid regions bordering the Sahara deserts in the north of the continent. Both these vegetation provide habitat for different species of birds and wildlife. It is not uncommon to find herds of elephants, zebras, Uganda kob, kudus, antelopes, buffaloes.... grazing or migrating from one region to other in the Savannah grasslands that have characterized the northern and north-western parts of the country. Not surprisingly you will also find predators that help keep these populations of herbivores in check. These include prides of lions, cheetahs, leopard and the ubiquitous scavengers the hyenas. For those who have not known or have heard but not visited this beautiful country, i intend to paint for you a picture of what it is all about. Its wildlife, people and cultures.....
