Ultralight Motorized Gliders
Another name for the Ultralight is the microlight but most know it by the Ultralight.
The FAR 103 specify an Ultralight as a single seat aircraft, which uses less than 5 US gallons. The empty weight being less than 254 pounds with a top speed of 55 knots or 64 mpg. You can only fly during the day over unpopulated areas.
In 2004 the FAA put the Ultralight under the Light Sport category so you would need a sport pilot certificate.
No training is required but highly advised.
Un-powered Ultralights or aeroplanes are hang gliders, paragliders and such and are limited to 155 LB in weight. Some might be experimental aircraft but if it is lightweight it usually is an Ultralight.
The first Ultralight was a hand glider with a small motor with flexible wings. Now you can find Ultralights that different in appearance from a kite to a small airplane to a even a hot air balloon. Most recently the electric powered Ultralight has become popular. Because of their low power they make a good candidate for an electric powered aircraft. You can buy kits to convert your Ultralight from gas to electric power.
The down side to an Ultralight is the safely factor. They have a poor safety reputation. I personally knew someone who died in an Ultralight crash. This may be because of the lack of training that is required so if you plan on buying one make sure you get plenty of training.

- Hi Susan714 - I've always had the flying bug - haven't we all? I took some flying lessons when we were living in Phoenix about 10 years ago and it was one of the most incredible experiences in my life. I've toyed with the thought of getting an ultralight and may still one day.
