Living Inside a Work of Art

One of the benefits of selling real estate in Sarasota & Her Islands is touring fabulous homes for sale in this upscale community located on the west coast of Florida. Even so, nothing prepared me for visiting the Umbrella House when my office had the listing about five years ago.

When I told my wife about the open house, she insisted on coming along because, as a Jacksonville, Florida, native, she admired the Milam House also designed by Paul Rudolph.

When we stepped inside, we felt as through we stood within a work of art. I remember thinking about the profile of the prospective buyer as an art collector of houses.

Today new owners Vincent and Julie Ciulla who are noted museum planners and designers have completed the restoration of the interior and are addressing the exterior. They seek to use the home both as a residence and to educate people about the Sarasota School of Architecture and Paul Rudolph.

The Umbrella House

Cruisin' the Hood | Sarasota Magazine
Legends abound: The modernist complex of buildings at the east end of the street is unfailingly referred to as "The Bobby Vinton House" after its one-time owner; and the handsome cube in the center of the neighborhood, an icon of the Sarasota School, is called Paul Rudolph's "Umbrella House," even though its "umbrella" pool shelter is long gone.

For sophisticated tourists, the excitement of 1958 Florida gleams in Sarasota architecture. The Bauhaus beach houses and progressive public buildings that thrilled midcentury America still provide an extra attraction and inspiration for 21st-century dreamers.

To see the work of Paul Rudolph, the genius who studied under legendary Walter Gropius at Harvard and later headed Yale's architecture school, take a leisurely drive through Lido Shores, in the mangroves just off St. Armand's Circle. Forget the mansions on the water; small one- and two-story houses on the winding interior streets are the soul of Sarasota modernism.

[Philip Hiss] hired Paul Rudolph to design a speculative house for his Lido Shores development 'to attract attention from the road and in the architectural journals,' according to Bill Rupp. Hiss was not disappointed: the result was a very Floridian house of temple-like quality

Vincent and Julie Ciulla knew what they were getting into. When they bought the Umbrella House, on Westway Drive in Sarasota's Lido Shores, in 2005, they knew they had purchased one of the most notable houses in America.

The Umbrella House (1953) designed by Paul Rudolph is the most famous house in the neighborhood, and possibly the most famous Sarasota School of Architecture building. It got its name from the second roof, or umbrella, that covered the house and pool. It blew off in a storm decades ago , but there are plans to rebuild it. The house has been meticulously restored and includes period furnishings.

Treasured Examples of His Sarasota Work

At a time when designers and architects are thinking more and more about sustainability issues in their practices, they often ignore or are ignorant of past examples, such as the important work done by the Sarasota School in the days when architects naturally built to climate. Each Schulman image unites perception and understanding for the buildings and their place in the landscape. The precise compositions reveal not just the architectural ideas behind a building's surface, but also the visions and hopes of an entire age. A sense of humanity is always present in his work, even when the human figure is absent from the actual photographs.

the author explains, for example, how to take an artfully composed image of a tiny, mirrored room without capturing unwanted reflections; how to shoot tall, multi-story buildings in confined spaces from numerous vantage points; and how to capture the perfect image with dramatic illumination and shadows.
