Three reasons to love Scrooge McDuck

Take this page over and tell the world why YOU admire Scrooge McDuck.

Scrooge McDuck at a Glance

Scrooge McDuck or Uncle Scrooge is a fictional Scottish Glaswegian anthropomorphic duck created by Carl Barks that first appeared in Four Color Comics #178, Christmas on Bear Mountain, published by Dell Comics in December, 1947.

Over the decades, Scrooge has emerged from being a mere supporting character to a major figure of the Duck universe, even giving it its popular name Scrooge McDuck universe. In 1952, he was given his own comic book series, Uncle Scrooge, which still runs today. As the character's popularity rose, he appeared in various television specials, films, and video games. Scrooge, along with several other characters of Duckburg, has enjoyed international popularity, particularly in Europe, and his books are frequently translated into other languages.

Scrooge's name is of course based on that of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character from Charles Dickens' 1843 novel A Christmas Carol. Although never explicitly confirmed by Barks, it is theorized that Scottish industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who left his country for America at 13, served as a model for Uncle Scrooge (in Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, Scrooge leaves Scotland for the United States at age 13). There is conjecture another potential prototype for Scrooge was a character (with no name) who had many of Scrooge's characteristics including sideburns, glasses and Scottish accent that was featured in the Disney-produced World War II propaganda film, The Spirit of 43'' in 1943.Gerstein, David, "1st Scrooge McDuck in 1943??", Retrieved on October 9, 2008.

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck confirmed Don Rosa's status as the heir apparent to the great Carl Barks as Disney's premiere comic storyteller.

For this massive 12-part epic, originally printed in Uncle Scrooge 285-296 (April 1994 through February 1996), Rosa combed through Barks' stories for the many clues about what transformed Scrooge McDuck from a Scottish boy to the richest duck alive. Thus, Scrooge's comment that he fought in the "cattle wars of the old frontier" was turned into a story about the young Scrooge's cattle job in Montana.

Rosa incorporates actual historical facts with known elements of the Scrooge mythology to spin an incredibly rich chronicle, full of tall tales, crazy gags, and high adventure.

The 1995 Eisner winner for Best Serialized Story is even better in trade paperback format, in which Rosa offers his own memories of writing the story, "insane details to look for," and rare art. Want more of Rosa's Scrooge? The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion collects other stories about the life of Scrooge that weren't in the original series. --David Horiuchi

Introducing Kindle

Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device-a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle.

Kindle:
Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device

We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, reading Kindle's screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper-and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both "lefties" and "righties" can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time.

We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you'll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills-we take care of the hassles so you can just read.

With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven't read the book for tomorrow night's book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you're in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand.

And because we know you can't judge a book by its cover, Kindle lets you download and read the beginning of books for free. This way, you can try it out-if you like it, simply buy and download with 1-Click, right from your Kindle, and continue reading. Want to try a newspaper as well? All newspaper subscriptions start with a risk-free two-week trial.

Kindle's paperback size and expandable memory let you travel light with your library. With the freedom to download what you want, when you want, we hope you'll never again find yourself stuck without a great read.

We're very proud to introduce Amazon Kindle and we hope you like it as much as we do.
