Understanding the Belief System of Osteopathic Medicine

Doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) have a "whole person" approach to the medicine that they practice. They don't just look at the injured part, but focus attention on the entire musculoskeletal system to see how the injury has influenced the other body systems. Identifying structural problems within the body and then supporting the body's natural ability to heal and repair is what osteopathic medicine is all about. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.s) teach patients about how their attitudes and lifestyles can hurt or help their body to be well.

Individuals who are completely trained and licensed as D.O.s are fully trained and licensed to prescribe medication and to perform surgery. There are only two such complete physicians in the United States, D.O.s and M.D.s.

D.O.s practice all kinds of medicine including emergency medicine, cardiovascular, psychiatry and geriatrics. They are however, generalists first and specialist second. Osteopathics are family-oriented. Other specialty services that D.O.s may provide include gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics, internal medicine and family practice. Many D.O.s practice in rural areas where there is a critical need for physicians.

M.D. typically treat specific symptoms versus the osteopathic approach to treat the whole person. When a patient comes into the office, the D.O. just doesn't look at the ailing foot, hand or back; the entire person is examined for an assessment of the overall health.

Osteopathy is particularly effective when back, neck or shoulder pain is present, or when the individual suffers from headaches or migraines, it can also aid those who suffer from arthritis, or who have sustained sports injuries, or are experiencing the changes in posture brought on by pregnancy.

In its beginning stages Osteopathy was seen as a radical concept and rejected by traditionalists. Today, osteopathic medicine is considered to be very much a part of mainstay medicine and no longer considered to be an alternative medicine.

Doctors of osteopathic medicine believe in the power of the human body to heal and repair itself. They see their role as one of restoring balance in the systems of the body (bone, nerve, tissue, and fluids) so that the body can do what it is made to do and that is to function in harmony amongst the body parts and systems. The idea is that when the body is receiving proper nutrition, sleep and the individuals lives a healthy lifestyle then, the body can heal itself of any illness or injury. They also believe that medications and surgery should only be used if there are no other alternative treatments and when the body is unable to heal or restore without the use of medication or surgery. Your osteopathic physician will be happy to teach you how to live a well-rounded healthy life that includes eating nutritious foods, getting proper amounts of sleep and exercising daily.

Birth Trauma and Osteopathy

A birth that is interfered with for whatever reason including induction causes a difficult delivery. There are two types of difficult birth, an over-stimulated birth such as an induction and an under-stimulated birth such as a Caesarian section. Even a too quick delivery can cause dysfunction. The stimulus that osteopathy provides a baby can re-integrate the baby's nervous system which eases many of the symptoms such as an irritated baby, a baby that cries all the time or a baby that won't suckle properly, or a baby that has digestive problems. Other factors besides the birth can contribute to difficulties with the baby including parents who are in a stressful relationship, the mother's diet if she is breastfeeding, an incompatibility with the formula if formula-feeding. Osteopathy sets the baby's body back on the right track, allowing it to heal after the trauma of birth. When gentle pressure is applied to these babies the healing ability of the body can release stress and the baby is able to feed and sleep normally.

The baby's body has systems that are interconnected. The skeleton, muscles, and internal organs are all connected to each other. If there is tension or any type of pressure placed on any one of these systems, the effect can be felt in other parts of the body. Someone trained in osteopathy has the ability to touch the baby's body to locate the parts of the body that have become stressed, strained or which have become unaligned. It is important that the osteopath learn about the pregnancy and birth as one way of understanding the stresses that may have been put upon the baby.

No two babies will have had the same stresses during the womb or birth experience so no two osteopathic treatments will be the same. Typically it takes three or four sessions before the desired response to the treatment is received. Babies grow fast and so there is great potential for change and thus improvement in how there bodies function.

Assisting the body to heal from birth is not the only use for pediatric osteopathy; it can also relieve conditions such as epilepsy, and cerebral palsy.

In order for babies to experience good health they need proper drainage of venous blood and lymphatic fluid, a good supply of arterial blood, proper flow in the nerves, and proper breathing of body tissues. The entire body requires a free flow and distribution of tissue fluids, correct nerve activity, and unhampered movement of all structures contained in the body. When the body's structures are compromised by stress or trauma, the affects result in disease. The first trauma of life is the birthing process and therefore many of the problems experienced by babies stem from that original trauma. The body without interference can usually heal mild trauma at birth however moderate to severe trauma requires gentle assistance such as that given by osteopaths.

The Elderly Receive Many Benefits From Osteopathy

The Elderly Receive Many Benefits From Osteopathy

Aging is a natural process and we all go through it from the moment we are born our bodies start to age. As the body ages our joints begin to show wear, our muscles become weak and our nerve and blood pathways can become compromised leading to disease and conditions. Your body will adapt to these aging changes and still be able to heal itself. Healing may just take a little longer than it did in earlier years.

Seniors have many health issues in which osteopathy can help. The benefits of osteopathy include pain relief and improved mobility. The improved mobility is the result of increased strength in joints and muscles and an improved range of movement as a result of osteopathic treatments. Treatment may be combined with exercises that are geared for restored function.

Osteopathy is a safe, non-invasive approach to healthcare that is done in a gentle manner. Osteopaths take the time to explain what osteopathy is and how it can help the individual so that the elderly person will be able to feel comfortable getting treatment by an osteopath.

Osteopathy can help with the following ailments common to elderly individuals:

Neck pain, frozen or stiff shoulders, pain in hip, knee or thigh and also calf or shin problems. It can also help with arthritis pain, tinnitus, sciatica, stiffness in joints and foot problems.

Treatment may include soft tissue massage, muscle stretching, passive range of motion, and gentle joint manipulation.

The osteopath will also counsel the individual as to lifestyle improvements, diet, exercise or medications that may help to keep the individual in an improved state of health.

If you are elderly and are thinking of using osteopathic medicine you do not need a doctor's referral to use an osteopathic practitioner, and your private health insurance may pay benefits towards your treatment.

The elderly have many issues that can diminish their quality of life and osteopathy treatments are just one way of helping them to find pain relief, gain greater mobility and boost their body's immune system. Everyone's body can heal itself no matter how old the body is. It may take longer for the older body to heal.

Osteopathic treatments are especially helpful in treating spinal pain, lower back pain, neck pain, arthritis, repetitive strain injuries and stiffness all of these things are common complaints of those who are elderly.

It can often be difficult for the elderly to accept new ways so if you know someone who is elderly and is in need of pain relief or has a chronic disease that you feel they may benefit from immune improvement or stress relief it is important that you give them information about osteopathy so that they can become familiar with it and therefore more comfortable.
