Solar Cost - What are the costs of a Solar Alternative Energy Home conversion?
Welcome to my second article in the "Understanding the Solar Powered Home" series. If you have missed the first article CLICK HERE to read it now. You can click the link at the end of the article to return here.
A number of factors can affect the cost of a solar alternative energy home conversion (referred to as the Solar Cost). These factors include how solar installation is completed (solar contractor and/or DIY), type of solar power system you install (off-grid, grid-tied), type of solar panels, a battery backup and the power required for your home. The Solar Cost of a solar alternative energy home conversion is similar to a kitchen renovation ($10,000 to $70,000).

How Solar Costs can be Reduced
There are ways that you can reduce your Solar Cost by adjusting one or more of the previously mentioned factors. Solar home conversions that will remove your home from the power grid (off-grid) will cost more than one that remains attached to the grid (grid-tied). Usually, off-grid homes require additional forms of power generation (wind, micro-hydro, gas generator) to maintain the power requirements where grid-tied homes actually use the grid as backup.A battery backup is costly, as you will require a large number of batteries to maintain power for the government suggested 72-hour period. The backup is OPTIONAL with a grid-tied system, not so with the off-grid conversion.
Three types of solar panels available for your solar alternative energy home are Single Cell, Multi-Cell and Amorphous. Single Cell solar panels are the most expensive (efficient) with Amorphous solar panels being the least expensive (least efficient). Watch out for the number of solar panels that you will need to produce your energy requirements. An Amorphous system will require more than double the number of solar panels of a Multi-Cell system thus increasing the costs of such things as mounting brackets. See my article on how to "PICK THE CORRECT SOLAR PANEL" for more information.
Apply for every government incentive, grant or rebate offered to reduce the Solar Cost. Check with your local and federal governments for a list of these incentives.
The best way to reduce your Solar Cost is to look into doing some or all of the work yourself. A little do it yourself (DIY) can save you thousands off your Solar Costs.

Can the Solar Cost be an Investment?
The Solar Cost you incur today will become an investment for tomorrow. First, a home with a solar power system will INCREASE in value. With the increasing energy rates, you will continue to save, as the cost to generate power by your system will never change. If your solar alternate energy home generates more power than you need, it will feed the power grid and most utility companies PAY YOU for that power. Expect over 25 years of savings from your system.
