Unemployment Extension #2 Approved
If you're unemployed and nearing the end of your unemployment insurance benefits or if they've already ended, help is on the way. The US senate passed a second extension of benefits that was already passed in the US house on Thursday, November 20th, 2008. Bush has changed his position and signed the extension on November 21st, 2008. The extension covers an additional 7 weeks in addition to the standard 26 weeks plus the prior extension of 13 weeks. If you live in one of the states that has seen their unemployment rate pass 6%, then you qualify for an additional 13 weeks instead of the 7. For more information check with your state for their Unemployment Extension Benefits.
This comes at a critical time for a lot of people and hopefully the benefits will get started right away. A lot of people and their families as well as local businesses can definitely use the help right now. The average weekly benefit is about $300 but it depends on your state and your contributions. Find out specific details and any hoops to jump through at your state's unemployment office.
