The PROBONO CHALLENGE is your opportunity to make a difference in someone's life that you do not currently know.

My new effort to the challenge (I have to show a good example you know...) is a place where high school juniors and older and their parents can get help with the hard fought battles related to financial aid, applications, researching, cold-calling, and just about any other malady a student might encounter right before or during college.

It's called UniversityGuy and this is the starting point.

but you make it work

I am the Hothead. My blog reaches thousands of people every day. I decided that, after really good results with some friends and family member's students, that I'd like to donate my time and big mouth to your college cause. The only thing I want in return is a true and honest effort to do your best in the college or university that you ultimately attend.

We are just trying to...

... challenge the old-line way of giving. There's nothing wrong with giving the old fashioned way through checks to big giant organizations. There's also nothing wrong with eating a fat steak at your favorite spot every Saturday night either but they both make us lazy and keep us out of touch. The goal of the University Guy is to show by example what it might be like if you actually choose your best talent or something you are very lucky to have access to and offer it, in kind, to someone you DO NOT KNOW.

This and The Hotheadblog are the places where you can keep up with my successes and failures with the college help idea. Also, be enlightened by all the other rants I produce. As the hothead says... "it's all good..."

You have to do something now...

and after you do, give me your success stories -- you can do it!

This is a pro-bono challenge as described in our blog.

This means I want you to give your best shot and helping someone you don't know with a talent or service only you have or own, personally or through your day-job. You must offer it for free.

Here are some examples ::



  • Baseball freaks stop by a ballpark and hit some balls with kids in the shady part of town. Maybe their dad isn't around. Probably won't be soon.


  • Piano pros call around to some schools in the public system and offer a half hour to anyone that wants to show up. Meet them at your church piano if you don't want to have strangers in your home. Offer them a very cut rate to continue and don't chase them down when they're late paying.


  • Financial gurus go by those predatory tax shops and offer your services free to someone that's willing to listen. Or ask your pastor or priest who in her parish could use some free financial advice.


  • Film nerds make just one phone call to an important person in your Rolodex on behalf of a rising star that just needs a small leg up.


  • Take someone fishing that's never been on a boat.


  • Offer a clubby discount that only you get to someone that would learn from it or take them away from their troubles.


  • Call a family that you read about in the paper who lost a loved one tragically and make a meal for them, offer to take a burden off their hands, or let them sit at your beachhouse and stare at the horizon for a day.


My challenge to you is to step up and make your time exponentially more valuable by giving it away.
