I used to do it a lot in the 'old days', but it seems like a waste of time now. It seems to work better if you have quality content that is updated frequently, and a lot of backlinks.

Apparently, it is a must have, because it is in most of the link building campaigns that SEO Companies offer. If they are not pricey they are worthless. I have this month gone with a more expensive link building campaign and a reputable company, am looking forward to the results, however, the jury is still out.

Why should I submit my URL to search engines?
If you submit your URL to search engines, Your are informing the search engines that " Hai I have web page, Have a look it and include in your search results".
If you are not submitting, then sometimes it may take a longer time(few days, months,years) for the search engine to find your site.

Do I have to submit my URL to all search engines listed here?
No. Not necessary. But you must submit to the important search engines listed in the beginning of this lens.

Will I get more traffic after submitting to search engines?
You will not get traffic for simply submitting to search engines. You have to remember the following points to get more traffic.i
1. All you need to have Quality content
2. Should be updated regularly, Search engines love fresh contents.
3. Choose your keywords that suits your content.
4. Use your keywords in URL,Title, description, headings etc.
5. Get as many back links as possible
6. Maintain the quality of the web page.

What is pinging?
It notifies Services such as Blog Search Engines and blog directories that your blog has been updated. Thus enabling them to index your blog fast and make your content available for a larger audience.

Can I submit my RSS feed too?
Yes, You can submit your RSS feed URL to sites that are accepting FEED's.

What is considered as SPAM by search engines?

Submitting Repeatedly: Submitting your site to a search engine or directory repeatedly in a short period of time is a great way to get your site banned, or at least delayed.

Invisible Text: Text that is the same color as the background pages; enables site owner to place more keywords on the page and attract more spiders.

Keyword Stuffing: Keyword stuffing consists of placing as many relevant or irrevelant keywords and phrases as you possibly can in content and Meta tags.

Unrelated Keywords: If you have a site about Cricket,sports and your keywords include "Viagra" and "Britney Spears", that would be considered unrelated keywords.

Doorway Pages: Doorways are pages optimized only for search engine spiders in order to attract more spiders, thus more users. Usually optimized for just one word or phrase and only meant for spiders, not users.

Tiny Text/Alt Text: Tiny text consists of placing keywords and phrases in the tiniest text imaginable all over your site. Most people can't see them, but spiders can. Alt text spamming is stuffing the alt text tags (for images) with unrelated keywords or phrases.

Mirror or Duplicate:Sites. Don't duplicate your site, name it something different, and submit it again. This is not only ill advised, but it borders on stupid. Search engines will know if you do this.
