VE Day - 65th Anniversary

Ranked #13,830 in Culture & Society, #277,551 overall

Victory in Europe....

On 8th May 1945 the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich.

The Second World War had lasted almost six years and killed over 60 million people. It would be a further three months before Japan surrendered and the world could truly say it was at peace.

Every involved country will hold its own personal remembrances, but for Britain, who stood alone and got hammered in the Blitz during the dark days of 1940 when imminent invasion threatened, the event has perhaps a greater significance.

If the nation had fallen during the Battle of Britain, Europe would be under the iron grip of Nazism. The United States would have focused on their Japanese war, and there would have been no free country from to launch the liberation of Europe on 6th June 1944 - D-Day.

Remember this anniversary of VE Day. Stand and reflect.

We thank our allies for their support. We thank all those who made it possible.

A Nation Rejoices....

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill looks on as King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, wave to crowds gathered below from the balcony of Buckingham Palace on VE-Day.It was on this date that great celebrations took place across Europe and North America: in London over a million people celebrated the end of the European war. Crowds massed in Trafalgar Square and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace, where King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by the Prime Minister Winston Churchill, appeared on the balcony of the Palace to cheering crowds.

As Churchill said:

"....we may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing; but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts that lie ahead. Japan, with all her treachery and greed, remains unsubdued. The injury she has inflicted on Great Britain, the United States, and other countries, and her detestable cruelties, call for justice and retribution. We must now devote all our strength and resources to the completion of our task, both at home and abroad.

Advance, Britannia! Long live the cause of freedom! God save the King!"

We must never forget the courage and spirit of that generation. And we need some of that spirit now. 5 stars.
