Many people dream of a Valentine's Day wedding. It sounds so romantic and in fact, it is. Let's get to the down-to-earth realities. As a former floral designer, I'll let you in on a little known fact. Valentine's Day is one of the busiest days of the year for a florist. It ranks up there with Mother's Day. You would not believe the amount of business that is done on that day in a flower shop. It is not unusual for florists to work late into the night on Valentine's Day eve. The designers start filling orders 2 or 3 days ahead of time. They have to do that in order to get everything done for the big day. Everyone wants red, pink and white flowers and they all want them delivered on the same day. The demand is so high that sometimes suppliers are not always able to provide top quality flowers. More specifically, most people want red roses on Valentine's Day. The extremely high demand means that it may be hard for the florist to get enough red roses of good quality. The price of red roses goes up significantly every Valentine's Day. Florists often hire less experienced designers, delivery people and sales people to help get them through the holiday.
The upshot of all this is that you might want to rethink your idea of getting married on Valentine's Day. Wedding flowers are very labor intensive and the simple reality is that your flowers might not get the special attention they deserve on Valentine's Day. I'm sure that every florist wants to do a good job and they try hard but it is just the logistics of the holiday. If you simply must get married on that day then you might want to think about ordering silk flowers. They are much higher quality now than they used to be. They come in every color imaginable and best of all, they can be made far ahead of Valentine's Day. Your wedding flowers are sure to get the special care they deserve if the florist isn't trying to do them in the middle of the busiest holiday of the year. Believe me your florist will love you for it!
