Is This Any Way To Spend Valentine's Day?
Ranked #51,038 in Travel & Places, #1,291,694 overall
Chapter 1
Created from True Adventure of Valentine Day 2008. This is one Valentine's Day we both will never forget! Something to tell our family and friends about! If you were stuck in the snow blizzard on any of these highways let us hear from you.
Getting up there in age and being married going on 38 years, we wanted as much as an effortless time for both of us, for Valentines Day. In the past we have done almost all the special events for Valentine Days from the at home specials and the special restaurants to camping with candle light dinners. Going to special places and hotels so all of that is behind us now. We both just wanted something simple we both could enjoy without my wife working hard in the kitchen.
My wife had planned this day for a number of weeks. It sounded so simple and just perfect for us, being about 50 miles from any town as Camp Host. I don't like driving at night anymore so everything must fit into the daylight hours. We would start early in the morning and drive up to Palomar Observatory about 40 or so miles away through the twisting, winding up and down mountain roads.
We would enjoy the Observatory for a couple of hours then go down by the city of Ramona California to a Lake and Dam. After exploring that area we would have the soup and all you could eat salad bar at Sizzler's, My wife's choice! I'm not being cheap but she insisted on this. This should take us to around 2 pm. Then across the street to the grocery store to pick up a few items, stop by the gas station and then back the 50 miles through the mountain to the trailer. We would end the evening by soaking in the hot pools at the campground, take a shower together at the pool's private showers then huddle together on the fold out couch stacked with mounds of pillows and end the day by watching TV. Sound like heaven to us! But it did not go EXACTLY like we wanted at all! In fact, I think that everything that could go wrong, DID!

Is This Any Way To Spend Valentine's Day?
Introduction
We got up early in the morning to get a head start on the day. It was a little foggy outside but nothing unusual for 8 am. I punched into the truck navigator system to take us to Palomar Observatory. Loaded up the truck with 2 frozen bottles of water, a little ice chest that held a 6 pack of sodas, a bag of chip to munch on and my wife made sure we had an extra change of clothes. She always made sure we had extra T Shirts, Sweatshirts and stuff. I don't know why she thought she had to plan for everything that might go wrong. When she brought our coats I thought she was over doing it. The weather had been nice, but she explained we were going up in the mountains at Palomar Observatory and it should be much cooler than here. She grabbed another bottle of unfrozen water for herself and I grabbed a soda. Ready and loaded for bear we started the truck and slowly drove down by the campground entrance. No one was in the booth so off we went up the desert road to the mountain road.
