Vatican Is The Center Of The Christian Religion

The Vatican is not just a St Peter's Square, it is a City, a State as well, it is the symbol of Christianity, the spiritual center of the Christian Religion.
St. Peter's Basilica is the temple of Christianity

In the picture you have St. Peter's Basilica and a small view of the Vatican City.

The Vatican City became an independent State of the Italian territory on February 11, 1929, when the Lateran Pct was stipulated.

Christianity is the religion that:
  • Honors Jesus Christ as its founder and as the object of its worship
  • Its foundational document is the Bible
  • Is the largest of the world's organized religions, it represent around a third of the world population.

After a short history, I present the art collection of Vatican which is remarkable, rich in history, and unique.

Vatican History

The history of Basilica St. Peter begins on April 1506 when Julius II, had the first stone laid of for the largest and most magnificent of Christian Churches.

The Bramante was the architect, his initial plans was to to build the church in the shape of a Greek cross, but the plans was altered in 1547 by Michelangelo and Bernini who gave greater movement to the surfaces, and planned a larger central dome.

In 1606, St. Peter's underwent still further alterations, as Pope Paul V transformed the original plan of a Greek cross into a Latin cress which had a greater length.

In 1657 the main architect was Bernini, he was responsible for planning and building the imposing colonnade of St. Peter's Square. It was a architectural masterpiece, they consisted of a majestic series of columns, grouped in fours and arranged in the form of an ellipse.

You can see the Vatican City Flag and The Coat of Arms.

The architecture of St Peter's is one of the finest and most important monuments of Italian Art.

The Vatican City has beautiful gardens and parks which cover more than half of the Vatican territory in the South and Northeast ( approximately 49 acres.)
The gardens and parks were established during the Renaissance and Baroque era and are decorated with fountains and sculptures, a wide variety of flora as well.
In the main Picture you can see a part of the gardens in the back of the big Dom

Vatican Architecture

St. Peter Square is closed at the far side by the Basilica of St. Peter's and on the other sides by by Bernini's imposing colonnades which extends in the shape of an ellipse closing the area in front of the Church. It consists of 284 columns and 88 pilasters grouped in fours, as to form a corridor 17 x 19 meters high. A roof is adorned with a fine cortices, and 140 statues of Saints.

In the center of this Square rises the Egyptian Obelisk taken from Nero's Circus where it had stood until 1586.
On either side of the Obelisk are 2 beautiful Fontains.

In the Square, in front of the facade is the statue of St Peter on the left ( by Giuseppe de Fabris), and St Paul on the right (by Adamo Tadolini.)

The portico or Atrium has a ceiling work of C. Maderno, 1612 which is decorated with stucco work. in the lunette over the principal entrance door is the mosaic of the Navicell, Giotto's famous work, executed by the artist.

If you visit the Dome, I suggest to end up on the large roof-terrace, from which you can enjoyed a wonderful panorama, taking in St. Peter's Square and the whole group of Basilica with the buildings and gardens of the Vatican City.

It is unique of its kind and you will get an image of the whole architectural design.

St. Peter's Basilica Interior

Those are the first 3 largest churches in the World:
  • St. Peter's Basilica 187 meters long
  • St. Paul Cathedral in London 160 m
  • S. Maria del Fiore Florence (Italy) 150m
As you can see the St Peters is the biggest Church on the world

I want to present classical pictures and also not as well known pictures which you can see only if you visit the Vatican collection.

The Sixtine Chapel is associated with Michelangelo beautiful paintings, superb frescoes, they are the masterpieces of the renaissance artist. You can stay days looking over and still have the filling that it is not enough to absorb the mastery of Michelangelo.

The Underground Crypt at St. Peter Basilica.

This is less known by tourists. The St Peter Basilica has an underground Crypt where are the majority of deceased Popes sarcophagus.

This is how the Crypt looks like:

In some cases, after being declared Blessed, a Pope was brought up from the crypt and places in the Basilica. Example:

Pope John XXIII was placed under the St Jerome's Altar, which has become a popular devotion site ever since.

It is an excellent book, largely because the reproductions of the frescoes capture the colors that you see when you visit the Chapel. I have found many art books disappointing, because they simply fail to capture the works they present. The book was created after the restoration (from 1981 to 1995). The text is also very good, describing the subjects of the painting, the history behind the paintings. This a must-have book is the next best thing to actually being there!
