Vedic Math
Watch YouTube videos and do tutorials on Vedic Math a mental calculating system from India. Vedic maths is truly an elegant math form inspired by the Vedas, or sacred Hindu texts. Between 1911 and 1918 Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960), a saint-yogi, researched the ancient Indian scriptures and drew forth 16 sutras, or word-formulae and created Vedic math.
Western mathematics is very left-brain. Vedic math utilizes the right brain as well; hence making math more assessible to a larger audience. As a math teacher, I believe Vedic math can support more students in having a positive experience with math, including learning disabled children. The beauty of Vedic mathematics is based on interrelations and patterning. It allows for creativity and multiple pathways to the answer - often done on one line or mentally!

Is your kid struggling with math? This book is a must for any young person starting to learn math who wants and needs a better way. It covers 3 school years (6-8th grade) and includes a student workbook and teacher's manual. The explanations are easy to follow. Huge sections are also appropriate for 3-5th graders. It could also be a great resource for homeschoolers.
Also, if you know of anyone who hated math (I'm sure you can think of at least one), this book could turn their perception of math upside down. Yeah! :)

Vedic Mathematics Teacher's Manual, Vol. 3
This book shows many applications of Vedic Math in calculus and trig. 'Triples' shows many uses of Pythagorean triples in trig (and a bit of calculus too). And 'Vertically and Crosswise' has a lot of calculus applications.

Ideas for Teachers
- Homework Assignment: I gave visiting this lens as a homework assignment for my kids. I made them write a few sentences about what they did and learned.
- Add a few Vedic lessons in to your curriculum. I usually do a little mini-lesson as a warm-up every couple of weeks. My kids love it!

Im teaching her this so that she can gain a more positive experience with numbers. I also work as an educational assistant with grade 7,8,9 kids who have learning disabilities etc. They are terrified of math and just feel they will never understand it. This is a way they can compute and succeed and gain some confidence and hopefull a little wonder and curiosity about math! Im very excited!
