One of the best space savers for small gardens is to use a keyhole layout plan

This is a great FREE vegetable garden layout for anyone to use who is designing a vegetable garden. The vegetable garden planting guide is unique to this specific garden. I personally researched this myself, planted it in my own garden and can verify that it was quite successful. .....Thanks for sharing

I'm a bit random in my layout, using whatever I come across to make raised bed and paths, many plastic bottles have been used in the past.... and equally random in what I plant. Nice lens cheers!

Michelle Obama has told Oprah Winfrey's "O" Magazine that her purpose for planting the new
organic garden is to promote good nutritional habits in her own children, while also bringing
attention to nutrition among children across the nation.http://tiny.cc/rytadw

Question: I've become increasingly interested in Companion Planting (ideas like "the 3 sisters" (corn, pole beans, and either pumpkins or squash). ... Would you suggest the layout that really take advantage of space and allow for such a planting style? Thanks!
  • Find-Online Mar 24, 2012 @ 2:24 pm | delete

Well I have been boring with my rows through the years. My best idea was when I turned the whole dang garden into a pumpkin patch because I was in a place in my life where I just didn't have the time to tend it. Great idea and the kids loved it!

Something I've seen a lot of on Pinterest recently is the vertical garden, where you use pallets or other materials leaning against a wall or fence and encourage the vegetables to grow up. I'm thinking about container gardening since I don't have a lot of outdoor space at my apartment. Thanks for an interesting lens.
  • gardeningchoice Feb 6, 2012 @ 12:05 am | delete
I hope one day to have the space to create a lovely garden such as the raised bed layout.

Excellent lens! In my veggie garden, I plant both in raised beds and right in the ground. I use whatever layout works to keep my vegetables rotated, ie, planted in different spots each year. And I use wide rows (as described in from Joy of Gardening book) for many of my plantings.

  • MadHaps Nov 1, 2011 @ 9:47 pm | delete
Nice depiction of layouts. The one foot by one foot squares is the grid design that is used when space is limitted, but if you have room treat your garden like part of the rest of your landscape.

This reminds me my farm, both in farmville and in my village. but basically we have enough space there to cultivate that's why we don't have any master plan for customization of land. We just divide part of the land for different purpose.

Happened to chance upon this lens while looking for ideas for my garden. This looks like something people should experiment with prior to setting up their greens to avoid mistakes and regrets in the future.

Its a free trial so give it a shot, I know I did, and its been of great help so far.

Vegetable gardens need plenty of extra watering. Most vegetables benefit from an inch or more of water each week.

Love your layout suggestions. I used the gardening tool for my most recent garden. It was easy to use and made it so much easier to plant my 22ftx60ft garden! I got lots of surprised looks when I showed family my computerized garden diagram. Quite impressive!!

Congrats on lens of the day! I have used GrowVeg for my garden and found the application to be very helpful. My fiance just used it to plan our our winter garden, will be interesting to see how it all turns out. I've found gardening to be more enjoyable as I get older and especially living in Virginia. Growing up in Maine required patience with mosquito's which I do not have. Again, keep up the great work!

Congrats on LOFT! Very informative. I currently use GrowVeg to plan out my garden and my fiance just finished planning our a winter garden. I'll be interested to see how it all works out. Living in Texas, it is really important to take layout into account when you plant. Shade is important for so many crops. Way too hot here to just plant haphazardly.

I've been here before, but I wanted to stop by and leave a blessing on my "Back to School Bus Tour." I miss having a garden now that I live in the high desert of Flagstaff, AZ. I may give it a try sometime, though, despite a lot of challenges in this climate.

  • Arc4life Jun 2, 2011 @ 3:25 pm | delete
wow, what a lens ! I am a fan of gardening. I have also heard that you should rotate your vegetables to alternative the composition of the soil?
  • Ravisankar Jun 6, 2011 @ 6:11 am | delete
Yes, rotation of the vegetable positions are always good. The rule is put dicot plants in monocot positions and vice versa. Do not pluck the whole plant while taking the fruits. just cut it at the stem level if you wish to remove the plant and leave the roots inside the soil. they have all the nutrients ready prepared for the next plants to come. Mulching the soil wherever it is not vegetated is essential. Always make sure that you preserve the seeds and use your own seeds. Watch out which plant needs more sun and which requires less and plant them in such an order that the plants like Termeric, ginger are planted under the shade of bigger plants. Make sure that there are 5 layer system existing in your garden.. big trees, small trees, bushes, grass varieties, creepers. All the best. visit http://www.palekarzerobudgetnaturalfarming.com/home.aspx

Great ideas! I'm currently using raised, permanent mulched beds. I live in a climate that can go from dry to sopping wet, for long periods, and you never know which one you are going to get. I find that the raised beds keep the roots dry enough, and the thick mulch keeps them moist enough. My biggest problem is planting seeds through it, but with the greenhouse I'm putting up, hopefully that will be minimal, and I'll be putting seedlings in, for the most part. Thanks!

I'm getting the "pitchfork itch" looking over your gardening plans, and I just looked up to see - more snow, on April 2nd! Fortunately I have a small area that I can start plants indoors. After bringing the kids to various places and getting ready for birthday party traffic in the house, I may take a little "gardening break" in the back room. Thanks for creating such an inspirational lens!

I love this lens, it's beautiful! I tend to spend much more time drawing my garden plans than actually gardening! My mom used to draw elaborate house plans, and I get carried away with garden plans. I think I was a Victorian in a former life. My dream garden is a huge Victorian garden with a spiky black iron fence around it with a huge fountain in the middle and formal beds. I love the graphics you created and all the pretty photos. Awesome lens! Bookmarked, faved & starred. ~Vicki~

Hi there, thanks for checking out my Lens. I really have always been old fashioned and traditional. However I really liked your Lens on the variety of vegetable garden layouts. I may break away from my comfort zone and try something different this year. Thanks for sharing.

I have a lifestyle now that does not allow me to have a garden, but I will have a home again someday and will plant another garden. I will use your lens as a guide. You have put a lot of work into this and it shows. Thanks.

We have such poor soil that we do all of our veg in 5 gallon buckets or tire gardens. We have a bountiful compost heap and a source for free recycled buckets and tires so that helps a lot. Last year the tomato garden had 220 buckets of tomatoes in it. Container gardening lets us grow most of our own food even though our soil is mostly rocks and coal. And at the end of the growing season, my flower gardens get augmented with the bucket compost.

always a very tricky task - however much ore little garden you have. Best tip I can offer is that it is essential to plan it, or it will go awry. There are so many different ideas out there - we tend to follow the 'biodynamic' option.

One problem with many of these - the corn. Corn is pollinated by wind. It needs to be in blocks to go to fruit. If you only have one row, or just a few, you will get ears with little to no kernels. You should plant corn in at least 6 plant x 6 plant blocks.

  • pyle_mountain Oct 8, 2010 @ 12:40 pm | delete
I tried a new garden layout a couple of years ago. Basically, all you do is locate good spots in your yard and dig a hole (about 2 feet wide by 2 feet deep) in each spot. Then you adjust the soil contents in each "hole" to accommodate whatever you intend to plant there. I found many advantages to this method. 1) If you don't have a good spot for a traditional garden, you just find good spots for holes. 2) You need only purchase enough fertilizer, etc. for each hole. 3) You can easily customize the soil contents for each hole - rather than a "one soil fits all" approach. 4) Weed pulling is easy because of easy access. I could probably list many other benefits, but these are the main ones.

Those are some nice ideas. I've always been a liner, and I'll probably keep doing that. However, I am doing it a bit different this year. I'm going to plant squash around the outside , with garlic just inside. Then of course polebeans with corn. But I'm also going to do a few other veggies in there such as peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, and other squashes.

This is the first time I'm trying this, but hopefully it will help keep out some rodents and insects like it is suppose to.

I love this lens, I am into gardening bigtime. I use the Mittleider method which is a cross between traditional rows and raised beds, We create "soildbeds" or you can also plant in "Growboxes", I really like the design of the potager garden from an artistic view, perhaps I can plant leaf and berries in such a design, GREAT work

We were at Home Depot yesterday, and our Garden Guru was there. We talked for an hour about gardening, listening to him give us tip after excellent tip about planting our fruit trees. He showed us a raised bed with an attached trellis that he had made, and we knew we were going to make one too. This is an absolutely fabulous lens! I'll be back. ~ Whit

Very charmingly illustrated, helpfully described gardening lens. One could get started without going to a large number of planning sources.
Maybe you have source of good seed companies? This is a difficulty here. Cheers. Blessings for your homeschooling. Have done it too.

I wish I had found your layouts before I planted my garden this year. Every year it starts off fairly neat but in no time my vines are crawling up places they should not be.

    Hello everyone,
I'm very excited about designing a potager garden, and would love to combine it with a rain garden (specificially designed to collect and hold runoff water from roofs for green gardening). I plan to put in raised beds (to keep the plants up out of the water, but beyond that am not sure what to do. Does anyone have any experience/advice/suggestions/links with/for potager rain gardens?

Very interesting. Right now I only have room for some tomatoes on the deck, but it would be cool to have more growing. Squid Angel blessed!

Really neat images. I used to garden a LOT when we lived back in Pennsylvania (we're in Flagstaff, Arizona now) and I used a combination of blocks and rows and did a lot of companion planting, with certain vegetables and flowers mixed together for pest control. I'd change things up every year, too. Anyhow, I really like this lens. Great information and presented very well.

Hi way over there in Australia. Great lens. I'm a gardener too and this gives me some other things to think about. The area I can grow in is rectangular so that's the shape of my raised bed. 5 stars.
