It's cool and velcro is a modern invention that helps us in ways we don't even realize.

NASA was one of the first entities to really take the velcro invention and run with it. They began using the velcro type adhesive in their space routines. They used velcro to help the astronauts maneuver in and out of their space suits. Then skiers saw the benefit of using velcro and began making their ski suits from it. Scuba divers saw the same benefit. However, not until NASA further used the velcro for aiding astronauts in space by storing food pouches on walls did velcro really get noticed. Up in space on missions velcro was used to help astronauts maneuver around the spaceship. Finally, due to the exposure from NASA, velcro became more popular and children's clothing makers began using velcro.

The Human Fly
One night back in February of 1984, David Letterman proved that a man placed in a velcroed suit could be hurled against a wall and stick. He did it himself and the attraction and sport became very popular. Amusement companies started renting Velcro walls and jumpsuits for 400-500 dollars a day.
According to Wikipedia, as it's popluarity grew, Velcro Jumping was also done on a regular basis in pubs in both New York and New Zealand, where it was a competition to see how high a person can get their feet above the ground. Jeremy Bayliss and Graeme Smith of the Cri Bar and Grill in Napier, New Zealand, started it after seeing American astronauts velcroed to walls during space flights. They created their own equipment for the "human fly" contests, and sold it to several others in New Zealand. It looks like great fun.

The US Army is a big user of velcro. It uses hook and loop fasteners on combat uniforms to attach name tapes, rank insignia, shoulder pockets for unit patches, skill tabs, and recognition devices, such as the infrared (IR) feedback American flag. They also had the Velcro company create a silent version of Velcro for use with Army soldier uniforms, as the ripping sound could betray a soldier's position. A new version was created which reduced the noise by over 95%. The manufacturing process to create this noiseless velcro is, however, a military secret, according to facts from Wikipedia.
