Leopard Frog
Vermont State Amphibian

Northern Leopard Frog
by David M. Dennis
Available from Art.com
The Leopard Frog is the Vermont State Amphibian. The Leopard Frog was adopted as a state symbol in 1998 after surveys found dozens of frogs were being born with abnormalities such as missing or deformed limbs. Vermont is hoping that by publicizing the issue changes can be made to save the frogs.

Morgan Horse
Vermont State Animal
During the Civil War my great great grandfather, Garner Rix Dewey raised Morgan Horses on our farm in Vermont. The Morgan Horse became a breed of amazing and beautiful horses right here in Vermont. The Morgan Horse became a symbol of Vermont in 1961.

Milk is a Vermont State Symbol
Vermont State Beverage

Young Woman Milking a Cow in a Pasture
Available at Allposters
When I was a little girl growing up in Vermont our only choice for beverages were water and milk. Milk is still one of my favorite choices. There was a time that every house had a family cow that produced milk. That is why milk is Vermont's State Symbol for beverages.
Milk may be the most recognized symbol of Vermont. Milk is produced by black and white Holstein Cows that once dotted every hillside up and down the Green Mountains. Though the number of cows in Vermont has been declining, there are still cows here and their milk still produces Vermont State Symbol, milk.
A new development in the dairy industry now has micro dairies cropping up again. Be sure to check out Bob White's Micro Dairy equipment which should help to return Vermont to prominence again.

The Hermit Thrush, a Vermont State Symbol
Vermont State Bird

Have you ever listened to the beautiful sound of the Hermit Thrush. As a little girl I remember my grandmother taking me into the woods of Vermont to look for the Hermit Thrush. She believed that it was important for me to get to know this Vermont State Symbol.

Monarch Butterfly
Vermont State Butterfly

Available on Amazon
One year we were walking through an overgrown field where milkweed was growing when we noticed a butterfly coming out of it's cocoon. My children were fascinated as the butterfly, a Vermont State Symbol, pushed its way out of the cocoon and crawled up onto the stem of the leaf. The butterfly's wings were wet and stayed folded. We worried that the wings were stuck to the butterfly's body. We wondered if the butterfly would be able to fly.
What we learned that day is that a butterfly needs time to dry and begin unfolding its wings. By careful observation, you and your children may get the chance to see a Monarch Butterfly, one of the Vermont State Symbols, emerge from a cocoon, spread its wings and fly.
Look for Monarch Butterfly eggs on Milkweed plants. Monarch Butterfly caterpillars prefer eating milkweed. Milkweed is bitter and scientists believe that Monarch Butterfly caterpillars choose milkweed because it makes them taste undesirable to their predators.

Maple Trees and Maple Syrup
Maple is a Vermont State Symbol
The stately Maple Tree is spectacular any time of the year. No wonder it was chosen as a Vermont State Symbol. In the Winter the Vermont Maple trees lift their bare branches to the sky, letting the sunshine in on roofs to help heat homes on cold winter days. In the spring the sap of the maple rises up the trunk providing sap to make Vermont Pure Maple Syrup, another symbol of Vermont. In summer the green maple leaves provide shade to homes, keeping them cool on hot August days. In fall, this Vermont state symbol cannot be surpassed for color.

- When we were learning the Vermont State Symbols we created a checklist that we could check off as we saw each one. We visited Morgan Horses at a farm next door. We saw red clover in our field. A Leopard Frog hopped off a rock on a path we were walking on one day. We even got to milk a cow by hand. Learning the Vermont State Symbols was lots of fun.
