Whats a guitar tab and how do I read them?

Many guitar players who are just learning use guitar tabs to get them started. Reading guitar tab is a lot easier than reading music but it does have its drawbacks. Guitar tabs simply use a numbering system to show you where you put your fingers on each fret and string on the guitar. Virtually any song you can think of has a guitar tab written for it.

HUH?

The first diagram is in a nutshell what guitar tab is all about. What it is showing here is that you will place a finger on the 7th fret on the G string thus producing the note D. The second diagram is showing a chord, when all the numbers are stacked above each other like that it means to play them altogether at the same time. A whole song would be a lot more complex than this filling up the entire strings with numbers as well as other symbols.

Some of the other symbols would include B followed by an arrow which means bend the string up, and H and P which is short for hammer on and pull off.

If learning guitar tabs and guitar technique seems difficult, you're not alone, I used to struggle with these things too. Once you have mastered this, you will have the ability to become a great guitarist.

To make things easier for you, I have done all the legwork to find you the easiest and the best way to Learn Guitar Tabs

There are also many great sites to help you find very easy guitar tabs as well as many other to help you understand how to use guitar tabs to get the best out of your practice time. Below is a collection of links to the best websites out there.

Hammer On's Pull Off's and String Bending

I wanted to briefly explain how to use these techniques while reading tabs. The techniques mentioned above is called Legato which basically means to play notes connected together smoothly. This is one of the secrets to playing fast.

Hammer on

A hammer on is indicated by an H on guitar tab. What this actually means is to fret a note (usually with the first finger) strike the string then slam your finger on the adjacent fret (higher in pitch) without repicking the string. This allows to play passages of music very quickly.

Pull off

A pull off is a hammer on in reverse, they are a little harder to play, but with practice you will get them down in no time. You start a pull off by having two fingers on the fret board. You will strike the string then literally pull the finger away from the string without repicking.

When playing a pull off dont just lift your finger off, actually pull down and away so that the note will ring. A pull off is indicated by a P in guitar tab.

String Bending

Ahh string bending, I love it, bending strings i think is what makes a solo, SOUND like a solo. String bending is quite tricky too, but practice it and it will come.

Most string bending is done by having your first 3 fingers on the string and pushing the string either up or down to raise the pitch. String bending is a great compliment to solo's. Listen to Jimi Hendrix and blues players to get a good feel of what string bending is all about.

String bending is shown as an up arrow on guitar tab.

I believe these techniques are actually the hardest to master, here is a great site i found that will help you play guitar with SPEED using hammer on's and pull off's

Guitar Tabs Pros and Cons

Here is where I become a "musician" and explain the benefits and drawbacks of guitar tabs.

Guitar tabs are infact very helpful and as the title of this lens states they are very easy to understand and they are a great way to learn songs.

But they do have their drawbacks. Guitar tabs do not allow you to determine the length of each note to be played, they are also hard to read quickly and they are made exclusively for guitar players. If you handed some easy guitar tabs to a piano player, they wouldnt know what to do. Learning to read music is a sure fire way to achieve your ultimate goal of being a proficient and capable musician and also opens up many more opportunitys to you musically. It's certainly not as hard as it may seem, but it does take some work.

To learn how to read music and how to play guitar whilst doing so Take a look at Jamorama through the link below and watch the videos and take on the lessons, very helpful!

www.Jamorama.com
Jamorama is one of the many online guitar courses available, I have noticed however that while learning music online is easy to access, a lot of the information and lessons (especially the theory!) is inaccurate or blatantly wrong. I would suggest Jamorama for you the student as I have reviewed the course myself and highly recommend it to my students and to anyone who is looking to learn the guitar the right way the first time. Believe me when i say that its a lot harder to undo the mistakes you have already learned than it is to get it right the first time.
