Do yourself a favor. Talk to a recently retired soldier about their wartime experience. Most will probably tell you that active duty is made up of intolerable boredom spiked by a few minutes of absolute terror. There's nothing one can do about the horror of war, but the soldiers found one particularly constructive way to handle the boredom - they took online classes through distance learning programs.

Not that service personnel don't get some kind of training when they are sent to Annapolis or Paris Island. Yes, this training gives our fighting men and women what they need to know when it comes to shooting a gun, peeling potatoes or swabbing a deck, yet many of these skills aren't transferable for life in the civilian world. Then again, it does provide an incredible amount of discipline one usually never gets from high school or even college. It's this discipline that can be used to their advantage when taking extra courses off duty.
