Congressman Paul Cosponsors "Combat Veterans Debt Elimination Act"

(PressMediaWire) Washington, DC Feb. 06, 2008 - Congressman Ron Paul has signed on as a cosponsor of legislation that would prohibit the Secretary of Veterans Affairs from collecting certain debts owed to the United States by members of the Armed Forces and veterans who die as a result of an injury incurred or aggravated on active duty in a combat zone.

If a service member dies in combat and has received Montgomery GI benefits, his or her surviving family members are required to repay those loans.

So far the VA has attempted to recover over $56,000 from the families of 22 deceased service members, with the bulk of the money owed in the form of college loans.

"This practice is an outrage and adds insult to injury to our fallen war heroes. They have given their lives in service to their country and they deserve better than this," stated Congressman Paul.

Three of the 22 cases of this occurred in the State of Texas, which is more than any other state.

Introduced by Representative Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) H.R. 5148, The Combat Veterans Debt Elimination Act would wipe the slate clean for these grieving families, giving them the peace of mind that the sacrifice their loved one made on behalf of a grateful nation is honored.

Brief Overview of Congressman Paul's Record:

Congressman Ron Paul has introduced a new bill. It is called "The American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007," and, as Ron Paul says, it is intended to "restore the American Constitution and to restore the liberties that have been sadly eroded over the past several years."

The 3 page bill (no fluff) should win support from freedom-minded liberals, conservatives, and libertarians alike.

What would the American Freedom Agenda Act do?

-- Restore the right to habeas corpus (the right to face criminal accusations in a court of law) by repealing the Military Commissions Act;

-- Halt warrantless eavesdropping and spying on American citizens by requiring federal intelligence gathering to be conducted in accordance with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA);

-- Give Congress the ability to challenge the President's monarchical use of "signing statements" to avoid executing the nation's laws;

-- Bar the use of evidence obtained through torture;

-- Prohibit torture and arbitrary kidnapping and secret imprisonment;

-- Protect the First Amendment rights of journalists who expose wrongdoing by the Federal government "unless the publication would cause direct, immediate, and irreparable harm" to national security;

-- Prohibit the use of secret evidence to label groups or individuals as terrorists for the purpose of criminal or civil sanctions.

Basically it will restore many of our constitutional rights and liberties that have been lost or subverted in recent years.

In each new Congress since 1995, Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) has introduced the Enumerated Powers Act. Most recently on March 06, 2007 - in the 110th Session of Congress.

The bill states:

"Each Act of Congress shall contain a concise and definite statement of the constitutional authority relied upon for the enactment of each portion of that Act. The failure to comply with this section shall give rise to a point of order in either House of Congress."

Basically, H. R. 1359 would simply require members of Congress, when proposing new legislation, to cite where the U.S. Constitution gives Congress the authority to pass that legislation.

What a novel idea! Sounds reasonable enough, doesn't it? In fact, it is completely consistent with the Constitution, which gives Congress limited powers, and prohibits Congress from passing legislation outside those limits.

But for more than a decade, it has never passed. Sadly it has only 30 co-sponsors.

The more we communicate with those who are willing to take their jobs seriously, the harder it will be for others not to take notice.

Our Founding Fathers would love Ron Paul. I think he is the only candidate who has actually read the Constitution. The only one who actually believes in it.
