Vickers Valiant - The first of the V bombers

Ranked #6,435 in Culture & Society, #132,448 overall

About the Vickers Valiant

The Vickers Valiant was the first of the V bombers, the three aircraft that made up Britain's airborne deterrant during the Cold War.

Rushed into production as a stopgap measure until the Vulcan and Victor were ready, it saw action in Suez during the Crisis and during the nuclear tests. As a result of rushed production and the success of the other V bombers, it was the shortest lived of the aircraft, but covered aerial defence at a time when it was vital.

"Vickers Valiant-The First V-Bomber" from Aerofax

An excellent resource by Eric Morgan

There are very few books available about the Valiant, which is so commonly overlooked in favour of the other Vbombers. This covers its full story from development and first flight in 1951, to withdrawal from sevice in 1965 after it was discovered that switching to low level flight had produced fractures in the wing spars.

No videos exist in the US about this plane. However Amazon.co.uk has a copy of the "Classic British Jets" series on the Valiant. This DVD also covers a lot of material on the early Cold War, with many interviews and details about the roles taken by the Valiant.

It is delviered worldwide, but this is a Region 2 DVD so unless you are in the UK or Europe (or have a multi-region player) you won't be able to view it.

Remaining Vickers Valiant

Photographic Print of Vickers Valiant prototype from RAF

No Vickers Valiants survive in flying condition or ground running condition. Only one complete aircraft survives at Cosford in the UK. This one had special historic significance as it was the one that dropped Britain's hydrogen bomb, marking Britain's emergence as a nuclear power.

Other than that only four nose sections survive.

The aircraft is close to vanishing into history altogether, like the Short Stirling bomber before it where all trace has been lost.

The photograph to the left is only available in UK and Europe, but is here for information purposes.

The first British Hydrogen bomb test

A video documentary

The British nuclear tests were carried out an airbursts delivered from a Valiant.

Although the Valiant is only briefly mentioned in this, the video is fascinating in its own right, showing footage of a hydrogen bomb airburst and interviews with the RAF men involved.

This is very interesting - I knew very little about this subject, so I'm pleased to come across it! 5* for a well-researched lens.
