About the Vickers Wellington

The Vickers Wellington was a twin engined bomber in World War Two. Along with the Vickers Wellesley it was one of two bombers named after Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. Over 11,000 Wellingtons were produced and functioned in a number of roles from 1938 onwards, including bombing, maritime patrol and test beds.

The Wellington (nicknamed the Wimpey) had an unusual construction that meant it could survive incredible amounts of damage without compromising the superstructure. Where the surface skin burned away, this could look even worse.

Designed by Barnes Wallis (of "Bouncing Bomb" fame), over 11,000 Wellingtons were produced. Initially design work began in 1932, and it joined Bomber Command in 1938. Daylight raids proved disastrous for her, but at night she functioned excellently. It flew its last bombing mission in 1943 before being transitions to maritime patrol, training and other duties, and was finally retired in 1953.

Filmed in 1936, this video shows the Wellington's unique geodesic construction that gave it so much strength and the ability to take damage. It has been combined with modern stills showing the detail of the aeroplane. This video was uploaded by Bomberguy on Youtube.

The Dambusters

Testing the Bouncing Bomb

The Wellington was also used for testing Barnes Wallis' bouncing bomb, leading to the famous quote in the film Dambusters:

Ministry Official: You say you need a Wellington Bomber for test drops. They're worth their weight in gold. Do you really think the authorities will lend you one? What possible argument could I put forward to get you a Wellington?
Barnes Wallis: Well, if you told them I designed it, do you think that might help?

If you watch the original film, they have included archive footage of the tests. The factial collection below includes more detail about the raid.

Maritime patrol duties

More than a bomber

Torpedo and anti submarine duties of the Wellington are covered in detail in the newsreel once the information was made public. It also contains an interesting look at early torpedos. In the interest of saving lives, the Wellington also performed anti-mine duties, flying low with a hoop attached to its nose that generated a pulse which remotely detonated mines. Details of this vital duty are covered in the second half of the video.

Surviving Wellingtons

Two intact bombers.

Despite 11,000 being built none survive in flying or ground running condition.

Two complete Wellingtons survive as museum exhibits, one of which is in the Royal Airforce Museum London. A number of other museums also contain parts and components.

A DVD of the wartime propaganda film

One of the better wartome efforts when the crew of a Wellington bomber have to bail out over occupied territory and have to try to make their own way back with the help of the Dutch Resistance.

Starring Peter Ustinov and Eric Portman, the movie regularly receives 5 star reviews.
